just loooked at my tank now and it has gone a little bit cloudy i looked in the cupboard and my plug to the fitler somehow loosened itslef and shut off it must of happened last nite as it was on last nite coz i checked it i have just started it bck up will it harm the fish?

They are kept in a mixture of RO and tap water. However, they were kept in pure tap water before, and had no problem.

Fed on beefheart mix, chicken breast and cod mainly.

Hi guys, I've just started looking at getting Discus in my tank. I have a 350 litre Rena tank and have kept Tropical Fish for about 10 years and really fancy getting Discus.
Ive just bought myself a PH meter, a TDS meter and a good thermometer. I think I will be filling my tank with RO water then adding some Tropic Marin "Re-Mineral Tropic" at a temperature of roughly 29.5-30 degrees celsius. I'm aiming for a PH of 6.5 and I believe a ppm of 150 is best?

I will be planting my tank. I have a sand as substrate but have just installed an under substrate heater as I'm told this can be beneficial to plants by increasing the water flow through the substrate.

Is there anything I should know other than all of the above? I read in one book that I could use peat pellets in my external filter as it helps keep the ph at the right level, is this true?

Any advice, suggestions or comments are appreciated!!

Head-Standing

Hi, my first post here even tho I have been a member and keeping discus for some years now.

I have done a search of previous similar topics on head-standing but was unable to get a conclusive resolution, so I wonder if I could ask for a little more help.

To give a little background, I took a male discus out of my main tank into a hospital tank as he seemed to be hiding, not eating, and looking very ragged. I transferred his wife with him to keep him company and prevent her from beating up the other fish. She is most definitely the alpha female, and these two have in the past been a very productive breeding pair. However, since moving house, I can only assume the water supply difference has upset them as they have not spawned at all. However, the move was almost a year ago, and so I do not think related to my current problem.

I was monitoring the male and feeding regularly and he began to eat well again by himself. Both seemed fine and then I went away for 10 days travelling, leaving their care unfortunately to totally non-fishkeeping friends.

When I returned, hubby fish is fine and his ragged fins healing and growing back well. However, his wife was dark which is not uncommon as she is a very moody aggressive fish, but she was also headstanding. This really shocked me as she has always previously been fighting fit. She seems able to move around and eat, but just vertical facing the floor. The tank is empty bar a piece of bog wood for them to hide behind if they want. Don't think she looks bloated or dented and she had a huge poo hanging off her earlier.

Have done large water changes as would be expected. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

How Often To Feed My Discus

hi ive looked over the site but unable to find what i am looking for, i have
just purchased two small (2-2.5inch) discus which were fresh water/tap water
rather than the soft water discus i have seen, my question is how ofter
should i be feeding them to grow to a large size at a reasoanble rate as i
have been feeding my platties in the same tank every other day on flake
food,

secondly i have been cleaning my tank 25% water change every week but was
wondering if im feeding more often would it be ok to carry that on or would
it be better to say do a 10% water change every 3 days?

Been keeping Discus for about 3/4 Months now, and currently have 4 Discus. 2 Blue and a Breeding Pair of (ithink) Pigeon Red, which are kept in a Community tank with a Pair of Electric Blue Rams, Glass Catfish, Purple Harlequins, Sterbai and Zebra Loach. All housed in a Juwel Trigon 350 with Fluval G6 External Cansiter filter.

I hope to build on the numbers of Discus, as well as some other Community fish (Tetras maybe) and sharing some of my photo's with you.

Hi All

We have 1 pair of breeding discus that are successful and we have had free swimming babies, however they only seem to last a few days, even being fed on just hatched brine shimp.

They are in a bare tank with filter and cone, the water parmaters are all good - any suggestiones where you think I might being going wrong?

hi again thanks for all the replies to the last 1 i have opted for the xmas moss.

now i have a second tank - complete blank convass so to put it. i want more Discus in there aswell it's 1200ltrs which i think is around 350gal!? my question is if i use real plants again will this method in puting the substrate in work?...

Peat at bottom, then gravel, then thick layer of sand on the top will the peat escape into the water if so how can i stop it? remember i want live plants so cant use membranes between and dont really want the hassle with pots with tights around like my current tank....

help advice please!

Nitrogen Supersaturation

Hi all, this is something i have never seen to be a problem in an aquarium in many years of keeping fish, but i have seen it in salmonid hatcheries, where it can occur when hairline cracks in pipes, in combination with powerful water-pumps literally suck and then pressurise air into solution, supersaturating the water with nitrogen. Fish then get the bends or gas bubble disease where tiny bubbles form in the tissues, normally fins, gills, eyes and lips, but occasionally internal organs. The way i would normally recognise it in a salmonid hatchery is when you see the tell-tail tiny bubbles adhering to the sides of tanks and other surfaces, and while i guess we have all seen tiny bubbles forming on surfaces in aquariums, i have never known it to cause a problem, that is until this morning....

i set up a new tank yesterday with a couple of corys to get the filter up and running. I plan to use it for a temporary quarantine tank for some young discus in a month's time. New tank 65litres with a new filter, an Aqua-One maxi 102f which seems very powerful for a tank of that size, current is far too strong and there seem to be no way of reducing it, though the tank has rocks and plants to shelter behind. Corys seemed fine last night. Filter comes with a few different connections including a venturi which sucks air in and without thinking about it too much i connected it and left this overnight.

This morning the tank surfaces are covered with tiny bubbles, the fish seem agitated. One of them won't feed and has what looks like a burst blister by its mouth (possibly a burst bubble) and the other is making attempts to feed but is swimming in circles as if it has problems with balance control.

Water parameters are all on zero for Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. pH 6.8.

i have changed over to an older less powerful filter and changed half the water.

Has anyone seen problems with venturi connectors before?
Has anyone successfully treated discus or fish of any sort with gas bubble disease, other than removing the apparent cause of the problem and treating and secondary problems like infections setting in on damaged skin or fins.

Counter-intuitively i have read that aeration and agitation of the water helps to blow off the excess nitrogen.

any advice gratefully accepted

The bad news is they are in a tank with approx 30 cardinals, and 5 other discus, so doubt they will be there in the morning.

Well here goes, what do you see? Mag x100. I see 2 spirally looking things which worry me, and some round "blobs" which have a flagellum I believe which are bacteria's? This was a sample of poo, from the bottom of the tank, about 30 mins old, squashed between slide and cover strip.

What Are The Best Heaters Today.

Hi folks, need some advice . . .

What are the best heaters available today in the UK.

Never used to bother with makes but about 8 years or so ago it seemed no matter waht I bought the stats used to fail or be very inaccurate to the point of boiling a tank of fish to death one holiday.

I want to put it in a marine tank and dont mind if it has to have a sep stat, but am fed up with some of the rubbish that is sold.

The only ones that spring to mind at the moment are the Jager ones by eheim

Hi All,

I was just wondering what thermometers people are using.

I have an emeim thermofilter, and 2 other digital thermometers in my main tank, that read between 27 and 29 degrees.

As we all know, with discus temperature is of paramount importance, and I need a nice accurate reading.

Does anyone know how to calibrate these things/ how to find a stable accurate temp?

Freeze Dried Food

Now i know there are issues with frozen foods,like maybe its been allowed to defrost then re frozen and i gather that frozen blood worm can contain a parasite(not to sure about this??).
So im wondering if freeze dried foods are 100% safe,or if there are any problems to be found with them.

hi people

just re-done my tank a few weeks ago after losing all my fish to a faulty heater,so i decided i wanted discus.Set up my tank (aqua one AR850 - 175L) a few weeks ago with sand as my base and got some plants and added a few bits of bogwood along with a rock decoration thingy. After letting it run empty and checking my water peramiters i added2 x black phantoms,4 x cardinas and 4 x rummynose.Went in today and got 2 x Discus and another 4 x Cardinals.The 2 of them hid at the back in the plants ,but in the last few hours they have came out and they have fed and are both looking extremely happy

Looking forward to learning more about these beautiful fish

During a recent topic which i posted (with regards to nitrite in my tank water) I was advised that the external canister filter which i am currently using is not large enough for my tank, i'm now wandering what the best way forward is for this issue?

My tank is an Aqua One 300L with 6No. 3"-4" Discus, i am currently filtering using an Eheim 2360 external canister filter. Cost wise i would probably prefer to use the filter i already have and add a filter to run along side it but all options will be considered!!

I have a trickle filter built into my tank which I have never used, are these any good or will i just stick with my instinct and steer clear of that!!

Head Standing Discus

Hello everyone, I'm a new member. I've been keeping discus for about 4 years now. My oldest (4 years)and largest fish has begun to stand on it's head. It was the alpha male in the tank and had a huge battle with the second largest male a few months previously, killling the second male and receiving eye damage with protrusion of his lens in the process. The eye gradually healed well however his mate then began to deteriorate and acted like she had TB with eating plenty but wasting away gradually. The alpha male became withdrawn and hid and developed a head down posture so I put them both in quarantine. I treated them sequentially with Mebendazole to worm them then eSHa Hexamita, then eSHa 2000 (fungus, finrot & Bacteria treatment) and even tried eSHa EXIT with 50% water changes in between each treatment.

The female continued to waste away then died. The male stays in the same posture, mainly in the same place in the tank and has done for several weeks, still eating and occasionally becoming more vigorous if I put in live food. The other fish in my main tank all seem healthy and continue to breed.

I use Ro water with Tropic Marin Pro Discus additive. There's no ammonia or nitrites or nitrates and I do a 50% water change every week. The tank is well aerated. pH is between 6.3 and 6.6. The fish has no external signs of illness other than it's posture and it's abdomen is not swollen.

I notice from the forum that several people have had discus adopt similar postures and wonder if this is a specific problem or is it a reaction to several different problems affecting the swim bladder?

Any suggestions?

Hi all,

picked up my microscope today, just a basic brunel SP20 monocular (x40, x100 and x400), and took some samples from the bottom of the tank to at least have a butchers, I know this is the not best place to start as I am sure loads of nasties can be found in the detritus on the bottom, but..

Does anyone know of any good links with photographs so I can play spot the bug (or hopefully not). looked in the forum library and had a good read.

Hi, i've kept fish for ages and bred various species succesfully, but never tried discus so i guess this is me starting out on a new challenge.

i aim to get ~8 young discus and let them pair up, and just see how it all goes, i have read loads of books and blogs and now i found this site so i guess i have most of the technical info i need at my finger-tips

assuming my efforts are successful and i'm soon overwhelmed with a number of happy healthy young discus needing homes (and i realise thats a big assumption to make), i'd like to know that the quality of fish is up to scratch, not only in terms of health and nutrition but in terms of their parentage. i guess in my experience with other fish is that its harder to find homes for mutts.

ok i realise that one person's mongrel is to another a fascinating example of the potential for genes to throw up interesting surprizes, but i would like to know that after the investment of time and money that i'm about to make, i'll not have made a fundamental error in choosing poor quality potential broodstock or lineages that don't mix well. also i guess as with other animal breeding there must be a risk of inbreeding fish that are too closely related

any advice on this is much appreciated, or suggestions of reading matter (have just seen 'trophy discus' by Au, Sun and Denitto on amazon, is it any good?)

Hello,
Could anyone tell me whether to airate water before adding to tank on water change. The reason i ask is because when i prepare 20 gallons of ro water with just 2 gallons of tap water (ph 7.6) and airate for 24 hours the ph goes to 7.2. However when i dont airate i have to add 5 gallons to get it to ph 7.0. I realise when you airate it releases Co2 which makes the ph rise. I just want to know which is the correct way.

I'm In A Ponder

Hi guys,

I am new here and as the subject title says, I�m in a ponder. About 4 weeks ago now I lost my fish (Oscar, parrot & silver shark) due to my filter having an air blockage in the pipes starving the fish from oxygen. I was in a shop 2 days later looking at what type of fish was available & I was taken with the look of the Malawi fish for their colour. Ever since then I�ve been reading about them, asking questions on forums & preparing my tank for them. But I noticed 1 shop having Discus fish and I thought what a beautiful fish and I keep coming across these fish in other shops & on the internet.

Yesterday I went to buy Malawi fish, but the guy that knows about them wasn�t in & I didn�t buy any as I wanted Mbuna type and no one knew which ones were which. At the time I saw the discus again and there�s something niggling me, making me have second thoughts.

Please can you advise me on some questions that I have with Discus and you might give me other information that I haven�t thought about. My tank is 300 litres, 1.20m long.

In a fish book that I have, it says Discus like the PH to be 6. As I�ve been setting my tank up for Malawi, I�ve added Lava and (I think) Taugh rock & a little bag of coral sand to raise the PH. It is at about 8.2 and my water is normally 7.6PH. I�ve also got bog wood and plants in it, which I have had in with my other fish. On the internet many people have different views to what PH should be for discus ranging from 6 -8. What would you advise and how would I lower the PH without taking the rock out or using chemicals?

If Discus are peaceful, can I put then in with other types of fish like other Cichlids and other fish like Angel fish, Platy, guppies,etc? please advise what other fish can be put in with Discus.

How often do you do a water change and how often do you feed them, because the information that I have seen is mixed from weekly water change to every 2 weeks and feeding once a day to 4 x a day?

How many Discus can I have in a tank?

Does Co2 Effect The Introduction Of Discus To The Aquarium?

I have read somewhere that care should be taken in terms of the introduction of discus to an aquarium enriched in co2.

Is there a method of introduction or is it a case of lowering the CO2 levels in the aquarium to a more rasonable level and then slowly increasing it when they are in there?

hi just a quick question to see if anyone else has had this problem.
i have a pair of wild res spotted greens they spawned last night as i was watching them i noticed as the male was passing over the eggs the eggs seemed to just fall from the pot asif they wernt sticking properly.

Moving Abroad

I haven't posted for a long time as I have been very busy with travelling and other stuff. I am moving abroad at the end of September so I am selling some Discus and equipment if anyone is interested. I have a breeding pair of Penang eruptions, the male I bought from Mick Minns about a year ago and the female I bought from Chens a few months later. They have raised to wriggler stage but I haven't had nearly enough time to devote to get them breeding properly. I will get some pics today and post later. hi. My discus have finally started laying eggs, I realise i wont have much success because there are other fish in a 80 gall tank , qty 10 cardinals and 3 corys and 6 other discus. however my question is i do a 25% water change every other day- do i hold fire for a few days. Also one of the smaller discus has a bloated body with white jelly poo after extensive research I am going to treat with metro from vet( tried esha and salt bath- no good). Do i start dosing/ water changes whilst i have eggs from pair.

Problem Fish

Hi all,

Well I bit the bullet about 3 weeks ago and bought 2 lovely 3" royal red discus. The tank was running well wit the 3 coreys and 1 angel (cause of problem? Unsure...) for some time and the plants came on leaps and bounds.

Now though I have an issue.

One of the discus I bought died within 5 days. I put them in, they seemed well but as predicted I think I put them in too early. The tank had run fine for a month or so but one night about 5 days from the last water change, all of the fish sat swimming at the top of the tank, gasping. I noticed when I came in drunk one night and you can imagine the mess. I done a 30% water change there and then (half 3 in the morning!) and thought it would be enough till I got up. At half 9 next morning, stinking hangover I went back to the tank only to find one discus dead and the other again gasping.

I done a 60-70% water change and bought an air stone which seems to have solved the problem. Since then I have been paranoid and done water changes (about 35%) every Tuesday and Friday. No other problems since.

Back to the issue in hand though,

My rough tough discus seemed to be fine on his own for about a week. Then he became very shy and any time I went near the tank he dove into cover. He is quite dark too. I thought yesterday it was about time he had some company and bought another 2 discus. Similar size to what I thought he still was, about 3" but once I got them in I realised he is actually much bigger now. 4-4.5". Anyway, I thought this would encourage him to come out more and it did. Only thing is, he comes out SUPER aggressive! He is chasing the new arrivals every time he sees one of them. There are plenty of plants for them to hide in but now he has the balls to roam all over the tank, it seems he is actively seeking them out to have a go. Stupidly, the angel fish which is about half the size of the new arrivals, is imitating his friend and now and again having a go at the submissive new arrivals.

I figure discus dave is being very territorial. Would I be right? Im hoping he is merely setting a pecking order but I feel these new boys arent getting a chance to breathe! One has eaten already but the other has not. Its weird because i have never seen a discus act this way but when he sees them, he makes very rapid movements with the back of his top fin, flapping it about, pulls both top and bottom fins in and "darts" at them. He sometimes starts to tilt and swim almost side on, really aggressively. He was not like this at all with the discus I put him in with, he followed that one around like a lap dog so i can only presume that as he has had the rule of the tank for almost 2 weeks, he feels its his. Can I have some help or info on this. Am I right or would it be something else? Also, what can I do to resolve? He is a lovely looking fish, prettier than the other 2. Oh, and also, now, he flaunts his colours more. He looks a lot brighter, almost showing off style.

Water change regime 30-35% every 3 - 4 days

Feeding Regime (how often and what type of food) twice a day - frozen mixed with tetra prima - bloodworm, mysis, mosqito larvae, discus diet.

RO or tap water (if tap water are you conditioning it?) only with stuff to take chlorine and chloramine out

What changes have you made to the tank recently? added 2 new discus yesterday

What medications have you used in the tank over the last month or so? plant food about 3 weeks ago, finrot about 3 weeks ago, "clear water" stuff about 5 days ago

What do you suspect is happening and why? bullying - territorial, simply because he didnt do it with the previous fish

What behavioural and physical symptoms have you observed. Goes aggressive with the other discus - ignores the angel. Swims almost side on with rapid fin movements and darts at the discus.

hi all i have been reading an article on the 4 week syndrome, and within that article it says that after 10 days free swimming the fry can be fed on beefheart or bloodworms. this goes against everything ive ever thought, as i always thought that till fry were six weeks old they could not digest foods other than freshly hatched brineshrimp or decap. any thoughts on this or has anyone tried feeding other food after 10 days would be interested to know as i have at present a 30 day free swimming batch of red dragon fry many thanks

HELP!!!

Not good news, just 36hrs after putting a healthy pair in the breeding tanks, the larger one-I think the male, that was being(expectedly) aggressive towards all the other fish when tending the eggs, is looking decidedly poorly.
He was laying on his side at the top of the tank this morning, so I have removed him and put him back in the main tank.
Colour wise he looks fine, eye colour is good, as is general appearance, he just seems to have no life in him.I have held him the right way up in the tank and he slowly swims out of my hand, only to rise to the top on his side.
Water parameters in both tanks is spot on.

Any ideas?I really dont want to lose this fish.
I did not disinfect the breeding tank, only cleaned it, so maybe this is the problem?Parasites?? I have some worming treatment- maybe I should use this? Does this sound like a parasite/worm problem to you guys?I have never had it before so am not sure whats to look for.

(Update fish is now sitting on the bottom, upright, but not moving.Gill movement is normal.)

Any help appreciated.

Hi everyone.

I have just got myself a couple of pidgeons and have noticed that they are very lively compared to what Im used to. My tank is usually quite calm and the fish mingle around aimlessly without a care in the world... The two new ones seem very excitable. I don't think they are ill. They have been in the tank for 4 days and are very healthy and eating very well. Colours look great, bur they are very active. They swim around the tank very fast, but don't bump the glass or anything, and they spend some of their time swimming from the bottom to the top in one particular corner playing in the current it seems. Im sure they are not ill. Is this normal? I would send a video but every time I get close to the tank, they come for food so they know me already. (I love that about Discus. If my other half goes by the tank they dont care at all)

I've done some water tests and the results are below just in case there is a problem but I dont think so. Can you take a look and tell me if any of the readings need attention.

The tank is a Jewel 180L which had a 40% water change 2 days before the new fish arrived. I have never done water changed as regularly as you guys suggest but have always had good/fair readings. Prior to this water change there was only one fish in the tank. This fish had only been alone for 2 days as I moved the others to my 2nd tank so its not due to overcrowding/territory/bullying. They all seem to get along fine.

Water test results are:

KH 2
GH 3
No2 0
PH 7 (maybe a bit high)
Posphate 2.5
Amonia 0
Temp 30.4
Water is filtered through a home RO kit

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Yellow Crystal Not Growing Or Eating

Hey guys. Back on this section again with a problem that isn't too big i hope.

I bought a couple of small yellow crystals 2 weeks ago and one of them is eating fine and the colours are starting to come through quite well but the other one is still as small as when i bought it and it is still white. No yellow has started coming through yet. And i've never seen it eat in the past 2 weeks. All the other discus in the tank are eating, growing and their colours are all there. Its just this one thats having problems.

Hi All,
as you may or may not know, I have had mnany spawnings with a leopard, but these have always failed due to I believe her pairing up solely with other females.(Whatever floats your boat eh!lol)
As I have no confirmed males, I loaned her to a friend with some discus, and spare tank etc, to see how he could do.Well, whilst waiting, 2 other fish(Both Cobalts)Paired up, laid eggs which eyed up, and hatched about 20-30 babies.Now this was in the community tank(Just with other discus/corydoras and cardinals) and the babies were gone in the morning, but at least I have a confirmed pair-and both cobalts!!
I'm well chuffed as I do like to keep strains pure if at all possible(although would have settled for anything really lol-)
With this happening it was all hands to the deck to quickly set up a tank in the garage(20 Gal-75 LTR) which is now done, and (Hopefully)new Parents to be are in there now looking good.
Fingers crossed, and soon i will be panicking on setting up brine shrimp hatchery etc!!
Will keep you informed and post pics when possible.

Having A Bad Day With My Discus

I don't know if I am actually fed up of my Discus or Im just having a bad day.

2 of my fish had white jelly poo. A red melon and a Large blue turk.

A few weeks ago my large snakeskin started with some strange white spots

17 day ago I bought 3 Discus and put them in my QT tank with a sacrificial lamb

On Thurday I decided to treat my tank as 2 of my fish had white jelly poo, Plymouth Discus said Treat with Salt and interpet 9. So on Thursday night I did a large water change and wiped down. I added 8 desert spoons of salt and 1 dose of interpet 9, On Friday night I added a Half dose of interpet 9, Saturday morning my Red melon was dead, Saturday night I added another half dose of interpet 9. Tea time today the large turk went really clamped and black so It needed to go in the QT tank but my 3 new fish were in there. Being in a flap I decided to add the 3 from my QT tank into my main tank and but the ill turk in QT. My main tank has turned into a war zone. One of the new fish, A Royal blue has been going on a mad pecking spree, Its had a go at every disus in the tank apart from a young marbro and the large snakeskin but the yound marlbro has decided it want to start pecking at everything too. The marlbro has was my 1st discus that Ive had since the end of march so I don't know why it has suddenly changed. ARGH!!!!!!

Lights On For Too Long Or Not Enough?

Hey guys.

Got one about the lights. Probably not that important but thought would just clear it with you guys. I turn the lights on roughly about 12 o clock everyday before work then turn them off when i get home about 11 o clock. Is this ok or shall i have them on longer or less?

When i first turn the lights on, the colours of the fish are quite dull but by time i get home from work, the colours are looking really clear and stunning. This is normal right?

White Pus From Abdomen

good evening peeps,

this afternoon did my usual waterchange (50%), no problems.

came into the living room this evening and as always check all my little guys before lights out !
one of my blue diamonds has a white pus type emerging from it's abdomen.

i am a bit of a loss as to what this, would a member of this forum have any ideas ?
there are 7 fish in the tank and after observing for the best part of an hour only 1 (i hope) is affected by this.

water temp 30c and all water parameters are spot on, water changes 30% everyday with a 50% change every 3rd day (conditioned tap water)

any help greatly appreciated

well imagine my suprise when i get home from work, turn the lights on and see around 40 wrigglers on a leaf!!

the parents must have kept the eggs very well hidden the last few days as i havent noticed anything. i had my suspicions they may have paired up as they were very defensive towards one end of the tank. i dont have a clue how old they are as i swear i saw nothing yesterday!!

Even though theres a breeding cone in there they decided to put them on a giant anuibas leaf 2 inches above it :chuckle:

a completely natural pair, as i wasnt trying to put any two together so thats made it more pleasing. Probably the 2 best fish I have out of them all as well!

White Spot?

Im not sure if it is white spot but it looks like it. The temp has been at 31oC for a few days now, Ive added salt, Ive added white spot treatment but Its still there. The white spots are there for a few days then turn into small white patches then its all cleared up. A day or so later its starts all over again. The fish is acting fine, Looks fine and is eating fine. Ive not added anything new to the tank so Im a little stumped why this has started.

After long thought i finally got four discus on saturday and they seemed to have settled down well after just two days. The dealer said they were feed only on tetra prima but they refuse it from me. Only food they want is blood worms which i understand is not good every day. Also one fish cant seems to have a problem getting the worms in its mouth. He seems very hungry but just cant seem to catch even in front of his nose.

My temperature is 82 but should i go higher.

Help - my eruption discus hasn;t eaten for over 4 weeks - it stopped after an incident in the tank with a breeding pair - the female jumped out and I wasn't there to put her back - the dynamic with the remanign four fish has changed - no obvious bullying but the eruption stopped eating - have tried live food which got it going last time it stopped eating but to no joy this time - it's now slightly darker n colour and a bit shy, fins still erect and getting very skinny but slighly bulbous just behind the pectoral fins - white fluffy pooh last night - have treated with Flubenol - introduced another eruption (same source) a couple of days ago to replace the lost female to see if this would help but no impact whatsoever - water 28 degrees KH6.5 PH 7.0 nitrite - trace only - established 400lr planted tank - 50ltr water change twice a week - RO water with Aquadur - I don't want to lose it what should I do

Swollen Eye

Hi, we are having a problem with one of our male discus. He is a 6 inch blue tiger snakeskin. He is in a 300 litre bare bottom tank with 2 pieces of planted bogwood. PH 6.5, ammonia and nitrite 0, nitrate 5. He gets a 15% water change every day and is fed twice a day, Hikari discus bio gold in the morning and frozen brineshrimp with omega 3, daphnia, bloodworm or discus mix in the evening.

A few weeks ago now we noticed that his right eye was rather swollen. There was no clouding and we had our cleaner plec in the tank at the time so we put his injury down to that, removed the plec and added some epsom salt to try and bring down the swelling. This didn't seem to help so we continued with our usual waterchanges in the hope that it would heal itself but it didn't so after couple of weeks we tried Interpet's anti internal bacteria treatment with rock salt which was also unsuccessful.

Any advice appreciated as we are at a loss of what to do for him now. He is currntly on his own as we didn't want to put him with our other discus until he has recovered.

One of the wilds just picked up a 10" Indian Almond leaf by the stem, moved it to the other side of the tank just so it could eat the last piece of BH.

Surround Sound Affecting Fish?

Hi guys.

This ones more of a question than a problem. Well hope its not a problem.

The strees marks still haven't completely gone from my fish. Im wandering if its cause of the surround sound. Dont get me wrong i dont have it really really loud like in the cinema but when i watch films, i do have the surround sound turned up a bit. The fish are on the opposite side of the front room to the subwoofer but i was just wandering if it could be the bass that might be the reason for the stress marks to still be there.

Any ideas or anyone had the same situation before.

Ive just bought 3 new Discus from a supplier on my local fish forum. I bought 2 at 1st on Friday but they just didn't get on at all, I've had to buy another today to help spread the aggresion. It looks to have helped too.

Anyway, The pictures are pretty lame but I just took what I could without stressing the fish. They are supposed to be a Royal Blue, Green snakeskin and a red snakeskin but im not 100% convinced. The royal blue looks like a turk. Can anyone verify what they are please?

Hi everyone, been a long time since last i logged in here. Due to personal circumstances i couldnt but now i am back! Anyway, i got a pair of discus who have spawned and hatched and at the moment there are some fry attached to the parents. However the parents have just spawned again. I would like to separate the fry from them as i think the parents might eat them considering they have just laid new eggs. i read somewhere that boiled egg yoke with water mixed so that its consistency becomes like paste is the best food that one can give them till around 9 days, before introducing freshly hatched brineshrimp. The method i read about was to put the fry in a bowl of water and smear the paste around the bowl along the water limit. Any ideas/advice please?

Fish Are Starting To Stay At Top Of Tank

Hey guys. Was hoping i would never have to start a post on this section of the forum. But i got one for ya.

My fish have just started to stay at the top of the tank. It almost looks like they're sticking their mouths out of the water to get air or something. So i done water tests on an old test kit i had. I tested Ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and the PH. The results came back all fine. Well the PH still isn't as low as i want it It read 7.2. So then i done the same tests on a newer test kit i bought a few months ago and still got the same results. The temp of the tank is 30-32. The filter is running fine and has a nice flow coming out of the outlet.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP. Please tell me its nothing to worry about.

Greetings to all. This is my first post.

Just set up my first discus tank. I am an experienced fishkeeper and breeder of 30 years plus, but have just decided to have a first shot with a discus tank.
I have just got 5 discus (average about 2.5" TL) in a 300 litre tank. Mature filtration is an Allpondsolutions 1400EF (1400 lph external) and an Eheim 2215 (so total turnover is between 6-7 x per hour) . Temp is 29C. My local tap water is pH 7.4 out of the tap and pH8.0 when aged.

My questions encompass two main areas ..

Firstly, how often, and secondly .. how ?

How often ... I was thinking of starting at about 30%, 3 x weekly, as the tank and filtration is mature, and the tank is not heavily stocked. I feed moderately.

As to how (probably my main question) ... I am aware that I should be trying to avoid major pH changes when I water change. To start with I have been water changing using water straight from the tap, which will clearly lower my pH slightly. What would you think is an acceptable range of pH change in the tank for a water change ?
I haven't actually checked the pH change in the tank yet when I water change, but will do so on my next one on tues.

At this time of year, the temp also dips a degree or so with a WC. The fish (in my non-expert opinion) seem very happy with the water changes that I am doing.

Would appreciate anyone's thoughts .......

OK here goes;

numerous pairs of proven fish, raised good batches before, in RO and salts. Fish are clean, nothing changed (if anything feeding a little less to help towards my problem). 30% w/c every day unless got eggs / wrigglers. dont feed whilst got eggs.

All in 18" cubes, sponge filter and heater

Most recently, eggs going white after 48 hours or so. Get the usual 1 or 2 eggs going white within 2-3 hours of fertilisation, but then after 48 hours, the lot turn, with the exception of say 10% which hatch.

Did an experiment and added a few drops of formalin and very few eggs went white, and majority hatched OK, so my assumption (and very much stand corrected) is I have an abnormally high bacteria and / or fungus count in the water column?

Done massive w/c's and no difference.

Any ideas please?

White Lumps!

Hi guys,

My Melon has suddenly sprouted two white spots, one on each side in almost the same place. They are too big to be white spot. I have attached a photo and excuse the quality as Blackberry's have the worst camera's ever, but you can see it behind the eye and gills.

Can anyone tell me what they are and how to get rid? Water param's are fine and the fish is as lively as ever and doesn't appeared to be bothered as not flashing against the bogwood.

After 3 weeks plus of waiting I finally got my five Wild Discus today

The fish are fantastic, two of them are huge specimens the other three are all slightly different sizes, the smallest is still around five inches.
The fish are a lovely golden colour with blue lines over their head and along their bellies, all finished off with a nice black halo.
They are now being allowed to settle into their new home.

I am extremely sorry for such comments in my forum topic. I have been working on discus project for last 4 years almost. My friends have installed R.O. units and still their discus are not healthy enough. I feel we are making our discus handicapped by introducing and imposing human technologies which are not accepted by the fish itself. We must appreciate discus that he copes up with all the conditions we provide. Mine is a unique approach may a age old one. We are playing with the immune system of discus. We are also making this lovely hobby extraordinary difficult. We all must try to find out How this fish can be kept more naturally?

Just been doing the last few bits of preparation on tank ready for my wilds Friday morning.
The boss went to bed early, so I thought now would be a good time to boil two litres of Indian Almond Leaf tea, just so the tank was just right for the new arrivals.
Didn't realize how strong the smell would be (normally just throw the leaves in the tank for 4 weeks at a time), wife came down the stairs like a bear that had been woken early from it's winter sleep

Discus Stand Vertically Up - Head Up

One of my friend bought six san Merah discus fish from his friend who was feeding them with blood worms (His friend is not agreeing on that he fed his discus with blood worms). When he purchased san merah one of the fish was having white poo problem. But once they were entered into common tank 4 fishes started white poo. We treated with Tinidazole for six days but slight improvement is noticed.

When we siphoned water and refilled with new most of the discus stood vertical.and started to breath faster and heavier. We then added Discus Magic Treatment of Azoo but out of six three are fishes are swimming at the bottom level but head up.

Can you please elaborate why this is happening? Is this a viral infection? What medicine will work on this?

Please advice.

Raising Fry From Eggs

I have an impressive breeding pair of discus which are laying all the time, other than the odd one or two are fertilised. I have in there a breeding cone, however they prefer to lay anywhere other than on the cone !!

They get to just hatching & they eat them, its so frustrating as the pair are so so impressive !! Any suggestions welcomed !!

Some extra info :

they are in a bare bottomed tank which is sparse however I have added a large fake plant for privacy.

ph is around 6.7 water changing 10 % daily

they are fed on frozen assortment which they love

temp 82

cant think of anything else for the moment, but I am considering removing the eggs & raising them artificially anyone done this ???

Hi All
Hope you are all well. My discus are growing lovely and they are healthy but a week ago I put new plants in with larger leaves and added sand to their tank . Since then I have noticed they are not eating properly unless it is something they really love lioke bloodworm. They were avid feeders and were always at the front of the tank at mornings to eat but not now.
Any oideas and could it be the sand they dont like eating off. Please help I love them and need to rectify asap.

Hey guys and girls.

Took a much needed trip to chens the last couple of weekends. Please see pics attached.

Got a little story to tell. Tips and advice you guys have will be much appreciated.

It begins on a wonderfull Saturday morning. Went down to see Francis and got a cobalt blue and 2 red turqs. Stunning fish, took them home and put them in my tank. 2 days later the blue cobalt started going dark and looked more light black than blue and the red turqs started geting the black stripes down their bodies. I spoke to Francis and he said that it was because i was under stocked. They get quite stressed if there's only a couple of them. So the weekend just gone i went down and picked up 2 yellow crystals and 2 cobalt blues. They all seem to be getting on really fine but as you can see in the pictures, they still have the black stripes and one of the blue cobalts looks a bit dark. They also keep going up and down in the corner of the tank. On one of the cobalt blue's has really dark black stripes down its body. Its also the smallest of all the discus in the tank.

Are all of these behaviour's normal? I've tested the water and the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite are fine, the temp is at 30-32 and the PH is 7.4.

Please tell me there is nothing wrong and that the stripes will fade away and the blue's will get their colour back.

Has anyone ever noticed that their fish are constantly opening and closing their mouth's? Their jaws must really ache after a while. Out of all this time, i've only just noticed it tonight.

Hi all,

I have just joined the community and looking for a bit of advice....

I am moving from a community tank to keeping Discus, and have heard loads of different ideas of setups. So was wanting your opinions on the following:

I am wanting to setup using sand, but do i go planted or not?

Water to use. My water from the tap is already soft, so do i just de-chlorinate? I also hear a HMA filter is better for Discus water rather than a RO as i have soft water?

I have done a lot of reading and am not setting anything up until i am 100% happy, hence these couple of questions.

Water Stats Poor, What Can I Do?

Hi all
A LFS owner once told me that rainwater is very good for your aquarium as it has not been altered and messed with so i ran some tests on my rainwater the results were;

slight traces of amonia, nitite and nitate
sonow for the obvoius question
is rainwater good for your aquarium if the PH can be balanced correctly?
if yes do you still have to treat the water in the same way as you would tap water?
do you inherit any further risks by using rainwater?
or was my LFS owner chattin rubbish

Dear Mr. Heiko Bleher Sir,

I am really pleased to have a word with you through this forum. I have been studiously working on Discus Fish Project for last three years. I have managed to develop water treatment products for Dechlorination, Chloramine killer, Ingredients for making Blackish water at pH 7.0 and also at pH 6 to 6.5. I have a smaller hatchery in Mumbai with canister filters attached at different storage tanks with Peat Granulate to drop pH down up to 6.0 to 6.5.

We get Muncipal Water in Mumbai (India) with pH around 7.0 to 7.4 very low TDS. Hardness is arounf 20 to 30 ppm. I have been uasing my own product at 10ppm level which is based on a water soluble form of Humic Acid. It gives me a light amber coloured water and discus really like it and italso acts an anti-inflammatory(Anti-fungus). This product also helps in developing Pro-Biotics in the biological filter and really works well. It also digests the slime releases

Just to let you know ive got the PAIR of heks ....THEY are beautiful and are settling in wonderfully.i havent taken a pic yet be=ut i have filmed them
they are just beautiful and i know you cannot advertise or recomend on here but if anybody is interested on probably on par with chens for discus
pairs ive never seen so many sitting on eggs and with babies a sight to behoold and a wonderful couple made to feel so welcome cups of tea on tap
i would love to tell anybody about them whose interested.....

anyway i ended up doing 466 miles in round trip and to me it was worth every penny

Getting Discus Again

Hey guys. I've been too long without discus. I've been keeping convict cichlids for a while but have now come to my senses. I am taking the male and female convcicts along with their 40 odd babies to my LFS on Saturday to hand them over, then going straight to see Francis to get a few starter discus from him. The water is fine for them, the temp is also fine and the only other fish that are in there are 2 clown loach (small), 4 danios, orange barb and a plec.

Im hoping to get a couple of blue turq's and a golden albino to start with. Does anyone suggest against that? If so please tell me.

Aquamedic Chromis Tank

I have an aquamedic chromis (tank only no stand) that has been drilled on the rear panel at the top in either corner ready to accept 25mm bulkheads

Glass is in pretty good condition with no major scratches anywhere, there is no hood or lighting. its just a bit too big really for a spare/breeding tank for my discus. perfect for a fishouse tank, although with a nice stand and hood made it would certainly work well as a display tank

i have a hagen master test kit and two hagen mini master test kits ...Last night i just thought id do an experiment and test the ph on my tank
which is having my new discus in and my current wild tank ,,here is the results

how on earth can this be ??????????

hi, my discus young,are dying off every day,i removed the paren't to a different tank after the young discus were 10 days old,started to feed them on newly hatched brine shrimp,for a couple of day's then started feeding them no1 fry food,but each day a couple would be dead this has happened every day now i have only a couple from this batch left,the water isfine it's 25%tap water 75% r.o water,ph 6.5 the ph was a little bit lower but i have raised it ,could this be the problem,i have raised other discus like this before +they are now 6mth old in a different tank with the same water paralles, i also have about 60-80 new fry that the parent's have had again so i don't want the same thing to happen to them, any replies to my problem would be grateful thanks, chalkie

Possible Filtration Problem Eheim 2128/2028

My tank has been looking cloudy lately, although all parameters are good.
Looking closely at the water it seems to have lots of hair like particles in the water.My 2128 is moving water at a good rate, and I have recently cleaned it, and changed to top white filter pad.
Any idea why it is not removing these particles?Also my amazon swords, although not dying, have never grown much, and are plauged by algae.
How do you grow plants well without the broad leaves getting covered.Could this be related to the filter problem?They have good roots on them, and dont seem to mind the sand substrate.
With the 2028, and 2128 do you put this white filter pad(top one) under the tray handle, or over it, completely covering the top surface?

Have 3 females and a male in 54 corner planted tank with Emporer Tetras a Sunset Variautus Platies. Well the male picked a gal about a year and a half ago and ever since, same routine, lay eggs, hatch, 3 days or so after free swimming the Emporers eat the last survivor. Two weeks later start over, The Emporer Tetras breed also but the young survive in the plants. nice source of income. Don't want to set up Discus breeding tank and nobody wants the pair, Oh well.

Ill start by apologising in advance for probably repeating a few questions many of you have answered umpteen times, as is usually the case when a noob jumps on! Don't worry, I learn quickly and won't persist in irritating questions, just let me get away with a few to begin with please!

Ok, I haven't kept fish for approx 10 years. Just bought a 200l tank and it should arrive next week. I'm looking to house 4-5 discus (not looking to start a debate on whether this is too many or not enough here! ;-) ) and want to make it a planted tank, some planted tanks look amazing.

Only trouble is that I have little knowledge on how to keep a good looking and successful planted tank, WITH Discus. I have a few questions which hopefully some of you more knowlegable members can help me with:

Do I need an undergravel heater? If so, what type is best suited?

What substrate should I be using? I have read many differing opinions on this and am looking for a general consensus. Again, excuse the utter noobness but am I buying 2 different types of substrate, one enriched with the stuff needed for the plants, then another, probably gravel or sand based to go on top?

Should I use an undergravel filter? Is it necessary, I already have an external filter?

What plants should I be looking to get? The ones in my local fish shop dont look like they have any roots, would those even survive more than a month or so?

I am reading a lot about some kind of CO2 input. I never had one of these when I last had fish, are these new(ish!)? Do I need one in a 200l planted aquarium? Are they ok with discus?

EVERYTHING in my tank will be fresh, brand new. I again am reading that to build up some good bacteria in the filter, ill need to buy some other fish (that I dont really want) after the first 2-3 weeks to get them crapping etc in the tank for a while until all the water measurements are spot on. Then, after about 7-8 weeks total, I can introduce the discus. What am I to do with the fish I dont really want? Is there a way around not buying them in the first place? Wont the plants help build up the proper filtration for the discus without the use of other fish first?

Before my local shop makes a mug of me and tells me I need every testing kit going, what EXACTLY should I be testing in the water. So far Ive got Ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, pH, hardness and thats about it. Is there more, is there less??

Any helpful hints or tips also on how I get started would be great, as well as my questions answered. My local shop doesn't seem to be forthcoming in helping me and will probably look to rip me off so experienced advice from a forum like this would be much appreciated. These are nervous times for me! I want to get the setup bang on before I introduce the "king"!

Bred these fish about 2 and haf year back and had a varied level of success, which I enjoyed very much.
Then out of the blue for nothing I had noticed I started losing my fish and within two weeks had lost most my breeding pairs.
Fed up, after the hard work I had put in to the hobby I finished all together!
It was a double lost as I almost gave away my equipment.

But I have always had an interest in these fish and decided to start again, hence this forum.

It was only a few year ago yet the various popular types have changed.

I am 54 and feel you are never too old to learn so all that I can i will.

i never thought i'd say this, but i'm giving up on discus! these stunning fish have completely humbled me time and again and i think its time to call it a day. i cant seem to get them disease free, flukes, worms, fin rot and secondary infections just wont go away! i'm not a novice, kept fish of all kinds for years, but i'm no expert. i know about water, testing and diet, but these guys have tested me to the limit! i've bred them in the past! i've spent hundreds on them,r/o and hma systems, and treatments of all descriptions! i have some nice fish(had) but even the strong ones seem to be succoming to infections! so its time to call it a day. not sure what to do with the fish, any ideas? ian.

Only Using One Gill! Help Please!

Hi all,

We have been having problems on going with our last discus for some time now. It started with cloudy eyes. I understand that this is a water quality issue so so we did plenty of water changes, reduced feeding to little avail. He constantly appeared to be irratated by something as he rubbed his eyes with his fins and shaked his head a lot. He started hanging near the surface alot and then one night we noticed that little segments of what appeared like worms were dropping from him. On closer inspection he appeared not to be using one gill properly. We assumed this was gill flukes and treated him with sterazin. This resulted in him excreting opaque appearing poohs - not sure if these are worms or not. We have resumed water changes as his eyes are still cloudy but to no avail. He is still at the top of the tank, sometimes fully horizontily although he can swim off normally if he is spooked. His gill movement had improved but today we have noticed he has stopped using it / can't use it. Also a couple of the pristellas have cloudy/fungus looking eyes. The latest water tests showed the following -

pH - 6.8
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
Ammonia - 0

The tank is a rekord 120, just one blue diamond discus left of the 4 we had http://www.forum.ukdiscus.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif and some community fish - pristellas, mountain minnows, 1 x danio, rummy noses, and 2 x ansiterus. The tank is planted and we water change twice a week normally but have tried every day and every other day. We use tap water with de-chlorinator.

I was asking if it were true that the addition of salt can lessen the harmfull effects of Nitrite in an aquarium.

as a NT labs Rep came to the shop and were discussing the different products NTlabs do and then we got onto the salt as on there packaging on there salt it says if you add salt to a pond that has Nitrite readings they say that the salt will lessen the harmfull effects this ( nitrite elevation) has to pond fish whilst the filter is trying stabalise it.

so i were asking you as you will probs have an idea would this be true in an aquarium also?

Hi i would just like to introduce myself my name is Jeremy Duignan AKA (poseidons palace) and i live in a small town called Keighley in West Yorkshire which is in the North of England.

I have a full time position at a local heat treatment and metallurgical testing laboratory, as a non destructive engineer and senior metallurgical technician.

In my spare time I manufacture aquaria for people all over the country and like to think that my prices may well be some of the cheapest in the country.

It all started about 3 years ago quite by accident really, and things had progressed slowly until January last year.

Now i have got to a point where things have gone a bit crazy and my spare time hobby is becoming more a full time job, give myself another 12 months and hopefully i will be able to leave my full time job.

Just recently I have started manufacturing aquaria for other people in there homes.

My fish frightened the life out of me today walked into the room and instead of being greeted and mugged for food as usual they were all hiding huddled together in one corner of course my immediate thought was OMG somethings gone wrong!! so out with the test kits....everything fine...alot of scratching of heads trying to work out what was wrong when I noticed it.........helium balloon opposite the tank..............balloon removed from room fish immediately came out and begged for food...............so to all of you with kids keep balloons away from the tank LOL
Anyway this got me thinking and a post I read earlier made me wonder how many have had this experience with their fish and whats the most bizarre thing they have been scared of?

Beef Heart - How To Make It

Many people have asked me about the recipe for beef heart for the discus fish that is why I put it below:My recipe for beef heart- a heart, 30% carrot, 20% shrimp

1)cut tendons and fat out of the heart
2)Cook Carots (best steam). carrot works well on developing red color of fish and is a good plant filling of food.
3)Whole shrimps with shells wash under tap water. In shrimps the most important are shells, they are cleaning ingestion of the remains of food.
4)2 medium cloves of garlic dice very finely.
5) Grind all together and hand-mix.
6) You can add cooked egg yolk very finely chopped. Problem is that with this component water becomes cloudy. But I found the way to it. I add a flake food Ovo-vit instead of egg yolk.
7) I also suggest to add a table spoon of powdered sweet paprika, it contains a lot of carotene.
8) Then Spirulina Forte 36% it is one of the key ingredients of every food. A time a go I added a spinach but it cannot be compared to the advantages of Spirulina. For me there is no a good food without it. This is flake food so when you add it you have to crush it by hands. Be careful not to overdo with the amounts. A good Spirulina is dark green (I suggest to pay attention to it when buying) so it turns the hart into the green color but the discus fish love the red food.
9) Two doses of vitamins good are Acti for discus or Fishtamina from Sera.
10) Mix everything thoroughly and grind with a grinding machine.
11) Leave in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes then re-mix and grind the third time. And finely you can form portions for your fish (cubes ,bolls). And freez them.

Mixing Ro/tap For Perfect Tds

Hi All!!

I'm sure this has been discussed many time, but I cant find a definate answer.

I have just finished a really good RO/Waste setup, in 2 water butts(1 RO TDS 007, 1 RO WASTE TDS 700ish)

Now I have heard to get the required TDS of around 130 mark, It has been suggested to add tap water, But does this not make the whole idea of expensive RO filration a waste of time if I am adding some of the salts, Chlorine etc back into it?

So far I have bee adding Discus Pro Minerals, which although is great, will prove to be very expensive in the long run.

Also I was tempted to add a DI Cartridge to bring the RO to zero, but is there REALLY any point??

Another small problem is my water seems quite cloudy recently(although been doing more water changes than ever before)the fish are happy, but why the cloudyness?Filter is an Eheim 2128 thermofilter.

Hi all,
has anyone every got their discus from Midland Discus?
This question isn't as simple as it first sounds, from what I can work out is at one time there was also a Midland's Discus.
The fish I've seen on their site look of a very high standard, especially the wild discus which are what I'm interested in buying.
The guy who runs Midland Discus seems very genuine and his prices are very competitive.

If you have bought discus from him can I please have your honest opinion?
If what you have heard whether good or bad, is second hand information then please refrain from commenting, it is because of second hand opinion that I'm confused about this trader.

Another White Poo Post

One of my discus has a white poo thing hanging from it. It has been like this for about a month now, Not with the same piece of poo though. I would say 95% of its poo is white even though the food I give them is red. The fish is acting normal and looks normal and is eating fine. Ive tried using Kusuri Wormer plus but there has been no change. The Discus is starting to look a little thin now.

My Discus Laid Eggs

I know I haven't been on here in a very long time so I thought I would share some great news. Two of my pigeon bloods have paired off and they laid eggs this afternoon. Woohoooo!!!!! I'm so happy. They are still white so I don't think they got fertilized but at least this lets me know that I'm donig something right. Anyways, thanks for looking.

Water Pump For Refilling Tank From Ro Butt

Hi Guys,
I have at last finished my RO installation and have 2 water butts, one about 350 ltrs that holds the waste from the RO, with a float switch that stops the RO pump when full, and another smaller(about 250 ltrs) water butt on a shelf directly above the waste one.
I have taps on both butts, as I use the waste for my garden(I'm on a water meter) and intended to make simple water changes from the tap on the RO butt direct through the wall with 6mm tubing to my tank in the lounge(which is against the wall)
Now, all the tubing etc is in place, but due to the lack of height of the butt, the flow from the pipe is literally a dribble, and would take all day to do a 50% change on my tank(all week maybe!!)

Does anyone know how to fix up a pump for this.I was thinking along the lines of an internal filter set-up as I have a couple knocking around.Ideally i guess a diaphragm type, like I have on my RO system would be the way, as the pipe would fit etc, but these are ludicously expensive.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Dark Discus and nitrite issues

Guys,

I cleaned my external filter on Saturday night and I notice my discus are now beginning to turn alot darker than usual and sticking to the one corner of the tank, at the moment one of the fish has stopped eating. The tank is 300L and I have 6No. 3� discus and 6 cardinals in the tank. The 4No. filter trays with media and filter casing were cleaned in tank water, during cleaning I added 10mm coral sand into the filter media to help keep the ph of the water constant at 7.0.

During the clean I stupidly turned the tank heater off and after a few hours I noticed that one of the fish was sitting at a funny angle at the bottom of the tank. When I turned the heater back on the fish seemed to be fine after a short while, could this temperature variation have caused the problem with the fish?? As I am at work at the moment I cannot advise off water test results until tonight but thought the earlier I get this post in it could give a little head start to solving this problem.

Had a bit of a disaster yesterday a clip failed on my external filter & come back to water water on floor & water level had drained so low discus were on their side. In a fit of panic I threw a bucket of water in & filled up the tank from the water butt. sp water was colder than usual althought weather was great yesterday. Today one of my discus is poorly, it seems he has a bit of a bulge in his eye Have put some soloution in there but he poor sod is looking very sorry for himself, hes a cracker also hope he recovers any suggestions to aid recover.

So flipping annoyed with myself bloody pump grrrr

Hi guys,

If anybody can help it would be appreciated.

I transferred my little guys to a larger tank 4 days ago. When they were first changed over all was well, but from the morning after they have not really been feeding.
They have also become a little tetchy, but when i've watched them more closely it looks like they are taking their lead from the larger blue diamonds.
The blue diamonds are around 8 months old now.
Any ideas ?

Been a fishkeeper for many years but at christmas 2009 i took the plunge and started a discus tank.
Started with 3 eight week old blue diamonds then recently added some pigeon blood and chequerboard (will post pics when i've figured out how to do it !

hello i have finally got my fry to 6 day old ,
when they are ready to come out, what size tank
should i grow them on in. another thing i heard is they are prone
to dying of gill flukes ,when would be the right time to treat them for this.
and what medication would i have to use. thanx for looking
there are roughly 70 - 80 fish in there give or take a few, at preasent
they are in a 48"x16"x21" tank with the parent fish i have a spare 4 foot tank

Hi all just need a bit of advice if possible.Just brought a new co2 unit and before it comes i am trying to work out how many bubbles to use the formula says this ?(volume of water x dkh : 50= number of bubbles per minute) but i dont get the :50 bit here are my readings ph 7.4 kh is 8 drops so its 8x10=80 divided by 17.86 that makes it 4.479283314669653 volume of water fully planted is 380ltrs so that is 380x i did 4.4=1672 i take it thats not 1672 a minute do i need to do somthing with the :50.

hi all, this is my first post as i am just a new member , i have been a fish keeper for more than 30 years and now keep discus with some cardinal tetra and corys as tank mates, my discus are domestic strains at the moment( 2 red turqs,2 blue snakeskins, 1 marlbro, 3 electric dreams) but am busy setting up a 5ft aqua one which i hope to keep wild fish, browns and maybe greens or blues, but have not been able to find any in my local area ( northumberland) i am now planning to order from breeders but not so sure about having them sent by courier and will be chewing my nails with worry till they got here , hope some members have hade fish delivered like this and can put my mind at ease.

Eggs Going White

I am successfully raising blue turqs in my water & have for a few years now. I have some lovely orange sunsets bought locally from a breeder 2 years ago & grown on to pair up, this they did and spawned last year & I eventually got them their own tank last December. Since then they have spawned nearly weekly but 99% time the eggs go white & fungus. Early in the career they hatched a few which never seemed to eat & vanished. A couple of months ago they manage to raise about 40 out of a much larger batch & these are now growing on fine so I thought I had cracked it, but they have now reverted to their original weekly pattern.

This is tap water with temp in low 80s, with PH not much more than 6 and pretty soft. Same as all other discus pair tanks they have a sponge filter, an upturned flowerpot piece, some floating indian fern and a small piece of bogwood with weekly 50% water change (prepared the day before) in a nearly 2' square 15" deep tank.

I have tried with & without the wood, and also added those alder cones that are meant to stop fungus.

Both fish are very attentive to the eggs and really attack me when I feed them so they are trying but.......

All I can think is the male is not doing his job very well - anyone got any suggestions? (they are brother & sister & I believe the parents came from Chens or someone similar in the south)

in all honesty heads wasted here with all the areas and diff web sites saying this n that, my tank is currently sitting at 81F and im wondering what if any is the best temp for a tank? 4 discus in it at the mo lost one and had to get another 2 as the two that were left one was being hounded to say the least to the stage he was dying as not eating and over stressed. After a long hard think I have decided to go WILD.
I have spent the last 2.5 years keeping Asian bred man made strains, they are beautiful looking fish, and they have humbled me many a time, letting me know that my knowledge about them isn't complete, but now it is time to have a real piece of the Amazon living in my front room. My current discus will be sorely missed but change is in the air.
As mentioned on another thread I have been busy turning my main 260 litre tank into a biotope. Now that the first stage is complete I've come to realise that my Asians just don't look right in there, so if this tank is going to be all I want it to be then they will have to make way for their cousins from the wild.
What this means is over the coming weeks / months all my current discus will be put up for sale to provide the room and much needed funds to enable me to purchase 6 wild discus. I will be posting adverts on the site properly over the coming weeks but if anyone is interested in my stock feel free to visit my profile and look at some of my fish and PM me for any more details.

hi folks, i've got these very, very tiny brown 'things' on the glass and surface of the water. not actualy in the water, just on it. the jump like fleas, and are only just visable with the naked eye. only noticed them because i'm treating the tank and had to lower the water to use the treatment. any ideas? ian.

Feeding 6 New Discus

Hi Guys,
I added 6 discus into my new aquarium 10 days ago and they have settled in really well and looking great, 3 red turqs and 3 blue turqs all approx 3" including tail. I am currently feeding them beefheart (2 10mm cubes per day) and tera prima (2-3 servings per day) not one bit of food left in the tank after a feed, am i feeding these guys enough as every time i pass the tank they rush to the top waiting on food!!! If they will eat more should i be feeding them more as long as they are eating it all and not leaving any laying around, i get the feeling they would eat all day given the chance!!

I put my hand in with the beefheart tonight as usual and they ate out of my hand for the first time, every one of them..............how much was i loving it!!!!! http://www.forum.ukdiscus.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/w00t2.gif

Can i also ask how often i should be cleaning my external filter and how i go about cleaning it, do i just take it to bits and replace a percentage of the media and the filter pads?? My tank is 300L and i have an Eheim ecco 2236 external canister filter.

at the weekend i finally got it into its final resting place

all the pipework is done within the wier, the 48hr water tightness test for the weir drain has proved successful so have dumped 25kg of sand in the one side, the left side of the tank will be a planted area with an array of crypts and giant vallis. the right side (with the branches siliconed) may have some java moss put on and i have some giant anubias on volcanic rock with some windelov fern which will go in that area

once my sump is built this week i can start planting it up some more, transferring from the old tank to new tank and then start filling it up

Hi there and hope you all can help,
about 4 days ago i got 3 discus fish from a store in glasgow called aquarium design centre. I got them home and was told to drop my tank temp from 29 down to 27 at least as the tank was too warm for the discus and followed this advice. Only found out 2 days ago about worms ect through a friend and was sad i was not told about this. The problem is 2 have paired off as expected and the other one is on its own but is not being picked on as yet. Went over to the tank today as they are still hiding as such due to they have not settled yet and was horrified to find the large orange one was covered in white growths kind of like a fluffy fungus. Is this its mucus or is it disease, the other two not showing this yet..........not sure what to do to be honest
Tank temp is at 81.5 27.5 tried to get a picture as best as i could

Worm Things In Filter

Hi all need your expert advise as you all know from my last post i have a brand new rio 400 tank so all the water is new and i'm using my fluval 405 out my old tank and i brought a pigeon blood about 4 weeks ago! Just to let you know whats new in the tank, anyway i just cleaned the filter out and first thing i seen under one of the sponges was a dark redish leach like thing it was moving like a catapiller (sort of) i tryed to get a pic but wouldnt show up,it was about 3mm long when stretched out,when i moved it on to some white paper it just splatted like jelly.Then i continued to look under the other sponges and seen very small worm like tape worms but really small and they moved like a snake so different to the big one! Not sure if they where the babies could somebody please help as i'm a bit worried now could they be flanks.

I have a "pair" of yellow crystals, stunning fish, but never bred. They show all the signs, lip locking, tail slapping, running up the cone etc etc. I was convinced I had a male and female, but as they have fully matured, not that sure now.Would 2 males behave this way to each other? I have heard of this with 2 females, but not 2 males.

ok, so i got a good quote to get a tank made to the size i need (24x15x18) and thought instead of me trying to cut glass i may as well get them to make it into a sump at the same time

any opinions as to whether the below layout should pose any issues? (top paint artwork here!)

im not quite sure how high the baffles should be, thats all. im thinking to leave a 5" or so gap from the top of the sump to allow for overflow?

until now that is! ive been keeping discus nearly 2 years now, and been busy trying to pick up as much info as possible! seen some nice planted setups on here recently. i'll be putting up a build thread shortly of mine

went from a rio300 to a 72x18x18 which unfortunately i discovered recently has a cracked base so recently i picked up a 72x20x30 fore much cheapness so happy days!!

in the rio i had it quite massively planted with a good co2 setup but when i moved to the 6ft i thinned it out a lot as i wanted to see the discus more than them hiding away all the time. with the new one i thinning out slightly more and will just have 1 corner planted. pics will be in the build thread of the new tank coming along which i hope to be filled this weekend

H all. I recently had a sanil infestation in the tank. Not a clue where they came from as nothing new added. Anyway, as instructed by local supplier, treated the tank with half solution(I had 2 clown loaches in the tank and the medication contained copper). Waited 1 week. did a 30% water change and retreated. BIG mistake. Loaches died within 2 days. Soon after 2 discus swimming face down and died within hours. Have done a 50% water change and think things have settled down

Now for the question. Has anyone had a similar problem with Discus and Anti Snail treatment.?????

hello i have a cracking breeding pair of fish male is a ss pb and the lady is a red turq
the trouble is i have had 3 lots of wrigglers from them 1st lot around 100
2nd lot around 200 and 3rd lot around 100 my problem is they keep aeting them at
1-2 days free swimming all water is good i do regular water changes every nighcan any one tell

I have just tested my tap water and it is KH 18 and GH 24 .Iknow that is high so i have oredered an RO unit ..when i start using the unit I have read that the ph might go crazy..Do i need to add anything to the RO water before i puy in my tank

1000 Litre Planted Tank

We started this tank off as a marine reef, in fact it was a dedicated seahorse tank , when the horses after about 5 years died thru old age (lifespan about 6 years)we thought we would try Discus in it.

We reconfigured the sump so we got flow under and up thru some noodles, thru a compartment where the heater sits and a compartment with squiggly green string(you can tell im technicaly minded cant you) then sponges of various densities and into the return chamber. The weir from the tank has bio-balls with a plate across the top with holes so it spreads the water.

We have a substrate for the the plants by JBL and its covered by silica sand. We planted up and installed bogwood and left it for a 6 week period.

I have photos of it at all stages but sadly most are on a computer that breathed its last and i failed to back them up , i will try to find what i can.

Its been running for a year or more now and has had no problems , a UV was fitted about 3 months back and has improved the water as did changeign filter floss for sponges as it totaly prevented detritus from entering the return chamber.

We are useing a 250w 10k halide light that seems to do the trick right now , we have a set up for CO2 but as yet we dont use it.Most of the plants are Aponogeton and cryps with a few Amazon swords and vallis and java moss.

I wil take some more pictures today as this thread is uselesswithout pictures !

paid a visit sunday to local fish shop for some stuff for new tank,they had some discus for sale �20 each i swear to tmy grave that these fish were smaller than a 50 pence peice ive never seen fish this small for sale i actually had to get right up to the glass to fully focus on them ...i was always of the understanding that discus should be at least 10 to 12 weeks old before being sold ...??

Ive just found several references to theis product made by TMC for worming flukes etc...also saw reference to the fact it only paralyzes the parasites for a few days ..doh...has anyone used it ? is it better than the Flubendazole products?

I also saw mention of a dog wormer being used Panacur....i wont use this in my dogs or pups i use another product. Flubenvet for chickens is just it seems another stronger solution of the Kusuri product. We have 7 Discus 5 of which we added 3 months ago, they are now about 4 inches or more head to caudal penduncle, thier kept in a 1000 litre sump system with the main tank being 72"x 27"x 24" nitrite and ammonia of course is zero and nitrate under 25. Gh 3-4 pH 6.9 to 7 . lighting is halide so it warms up gradualy and does not come on or go off suddenly.There is a large UV fitted .water changes are 10% or more weekly, RO water TDS zero remineralized.

The tank is heavily planted and all has been well , till this last week and one afternoon one of the younger fish went off on a mad dash as if a Tiger was after him ....after 2 or 3 mad dashes accross the tank it settled down showing his stress bars and panting, other fish remained fine .

The next day he was eating , but the day after we had another of these incidences and today another tho less violent . The older fish have been wormed but the younger ones have not . There are no lead weights in the tank at all .

The fish looks healthy with no bloating or raised scales and no damage except the first time when he knocked himself up a bit, when normal he breathes fine , when a lot younger he had a single incidence of constipation , which cleared after about 4 hours ,( fat tummy pressure on swim bladder and difficulty in maintaining place in water column ).

I would be grateful if anyone can shed light on what this might be , everyone else is fine , there is no more bullying than gentle nudgeing now and then .

Begin again, We have been keeping all sorts of fish and corals for many years, in latter years fish have become less of a work project and more of a hobby , so we can keep what we want and not just what sells http://www.forum.ukdiscus.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif .

In Lincolnshire we find it hard to find decent LFS and fish of good quality, so far our Discus here have been Singapore and i think not very good quality .

We have a 1000litre sump system with a main 6x2x2 tank and a 5x2x2 sump system for our Discus. The Discus breed freely in these systems but its hard for them to bring the babys on , they share thier tanks which are planted with various Corys adn scatterfish. Also I keep SPS corals in an Ultra Low Nutrient system with a few fish and inverts to do general housekeeping.

There are other tanks containing Corydorus and Plec types.

hi ive got a problem with some silika sand but i will start at the begining then you can see how i got in this messim just setting up my tank and had bought 40k of silika sand that i spent 5hrs cleaning now i had this in a bucket with a bit of ply on topsitting outside the shed [SHOULD HAVE PUT IT AWAY]anyway i forgot about it and went off to work not thinking the grandbairnes were coming down anyway when i got home from work all my gleaming silika sand was spread from one end of the garden to the otherand i wasent best pleased about this PUTTING IT MILDLY so to try to make amends my doughter got me some more off ebay as far as i can make out this stuff is advertised as 30k with free postage but is reclaimed stuff anyway it arrived and i started washing it well it washes up clean BUTthair is little tiny peices of whot looks like rubber in it you can wash some out but you carnt wash it all out anyway ive washed it and washed it that many times ive probably lost a kilo down the sink so thairs still some of this stuff in thair now whot i need to know has anybody else had this sand and will it be safe to use in my tank or should i just bin it thanks paddyray

i aint a discus keeper but do have tropical fish i found this forum when searching for tropical fish forums dont know if im aloud on here as i dont keep discus i would love to keep them but dont know if i will be able to give them their needs. and they are very exspensive aswell so i would have to know alot about them before buying them.

i have kept tropical fish for about 5 years inlcuding:

oscars
severums
angels
silver dollars
firemouths
neons
all sorts of tropicals i like to have different species as i get to know abit about every kind then if you know what i mean.

i dont know if ill be on here everyday but i will try,
if you would like to give me some information about discus keeping and setups they require i would be very thankfull thoe more i learn about these stunning fish the quicker i will start keeping them

Ongoing Problems With My Last 2 Additions

Hi Folks
I got 2 Discus at the end of Feb -you will see the pics of them on the sponsor section. (Penang Eruption and a Spiderface Ruby)
I,ve had problems with these 2 and a few days ago i lost the Penang.
I had them in QT and i added one of my Discus to the QT tank for a few weeks, everything seemed great with both feeding well and looking great.
The SFR was more timid than the outgoing PE.
When i added them to the main tank the PE fitted in no problems ate well and wasn,t bullied or intimidated by any of my other Discus.
The SFR tended to be a bit of a loner and was reluctant to join the group.
Over the last month or so the PE stopped eating and it,s colours would come and go and not the outgoing fish he was.
I dosed the main tank with Interpet no9 and no improvement.
Moved both of them back to the QT as i didn,t see the SFR eating much either.
I dosed the QT with Myxazin with little improvement although some days both fish looked alot better then they would darken again on other days.
I tried all types of food except live foods with little success.
Lots of waterchanges were then done (HMA) in the QT and it was always 1 step forward and 2 back with these fish.
Next was to try F&MG and this treatment was due to end this weekend.
The PE died the other day and just left with the SFR who has no appetite and getting thinner.
Tank stats in QT the same as the main tank
PH 6.8,,,,KH3,,,,GH6,,,, no ammonia or nitrite.
I,m a bit baffled by it all and wondering what action to take next if i am going to save the SFR
It goes to the food, takes it and then spits it out. which is frustrating to see.
Both fish have showed faster breathing at times, using one gill only at times and clamped fins.
Last night the SFR was breathing normally, showing good colour but still no appetite, then a couple of hours later he had darkened again.
Apologies for the long post, but that is the fully story to date.
Anybody any ideas?

Latests Projects So Far

Hi all, for the last 6 weeks I've been planning two parallel projects, here is a quick progress to date.

Project 1: To turn my 260 ltr main tank into a biotope.
First I spent lots of time researching plants, wood, sand and sunken leaves to replicate the biotope to the best of my abilities.
First purchase was a fantastic piece of wood that look just like tree roots, the wood was soaked for three weeks, then persuaded to fit in with two holes drilled in the top to allow for the wood to be suspended from the stress bar, again trying for a genuine look.
While wood was soaking I bought two different types of floating plants; Salvinia Natans and Pista Stratiotes.
Plants were put into a quarantine tank for four weeks, no snails or nasties SORTED!
My old vinal background was removed for the tank, all out side glass really cleaned. I then cut up a large piece of reddish / brown cloth. I deliberately crumpled the cloth then attached to the back of the tank as a new back ground. The creases make the cloth more natural looking.
Slowly the wood then plants have been added and allowed to settle for one / two weeks.
Plant growth has been amazing, I started out with just enough plants to cover 1/6 of the surface, now they cover 4/5.

Project 2: To set up a breeding tank.
With al ot of help from Jay (dubesky) I found a second hand 220 ltr tank (with all the marine equipment thrown into the �50. asking price!)
Lots of lemon juice and elbow grease and the tank is sorted again. It has found a home on my Kitchen counter looking back into the dinning room. I've set up a XXL sponge filter, matured for two months in main tank and added a XL air stone. Old planted theme vinal background put on for a bit of colour. This tank has tonight took it's first discus to care for. A male checkerboard I think, the female goes in tomorrow.

As for the next four weeks; Indian Almond Leaves and last year's fallen Oak leaves to be sourced, cleaned and prepared. Play sand dusted over floor with mixed leaves. Then I'm on the look out for some tiny pieces of wood to scatter over floor.
While all this is going on hopefully the checkerboards will have started breeding.

Photos will be posted over the weekend of my two projects, no time now, started new job this week and I'm needing my ugly sleep.

Mix Of Red & Blue Discus

Do you recommend to keep both red & blue discus in same tank ? In my tank, it is found that the red ones are always 'chasing' the blue ones. I'm recommended by the store keeper to buy more blue discus to solve this problem. I'm a beginner of discus keeping. Hi Guys I am in the process of changing my tank setup so i can keep discus.. I have had my water tested and its a bit high on ammonia and hardness. so i am running the tank with plants and wood no fish for about four weeks to try and get them under control..
The supplier has said that i need to introduce RO water slowly over that time period. When i finally introduce the fish.. How often do i need to do a waterchange and at what percentage ?? .When i buy the fish how many should i get at the begining? My tank is 180lts

Confusion With Oxygen And Heavy Breathing

Since I bought my Discus, they've been breathing heavily.
I added an air stone, the aeration was quite heavy, but still they breathed quite heavily.
I recently removed the aeration, and replaced it with a rippling water surface (thanks to the filter) but still the exact same breathing

Someone please shed a bit of light on the matter.

I just went to bring my spare 4' tank from my neighbour's garage. Checked in the garden for leeks, water spraying out the bottom seals in about ten different places. Guess I won't be using this tank until I can get it fixed by someone proper.

White Faeces

Hello, I've only just noticed that one of my Discus has clumpy white faeces hanging about a inch from its body which my fish have never had. Two weeks ago I treated with Kusuri, and a week later I did a second dose just to clear their systems a bit (I do this ONCE every month but I hadn't done it in two months, so I followed instructions and dosed a second time). When I did the second dose, I left the treatment in for a little over 24 hours, then did a water change. My intentions weren't to do two full standard doses, I just wanted to do a "quick" second dose which I no wouldn't of had a full effect.

Now the fish it self is happy, he's bright, all his fins are up high, he is eating etc. So I'm not too sure as to what is going wrong. But like I said, all fish are happy, and Nitrates are stable at 20ppm.

NOTE: the faeces do not contain air (from what I can see anyway) just semi solid, slightly transparent faeces. I'm wondering if It's because I haven't fed them yet today as their light doesn't come on till the evening and that's when I feed.

I was getting ready for work this morning at 3am walked by my tank that was under moonlight lighting and noticed my young pair of Royal Blue Turks in the proses of spawning, i had a little time to take a few shots, im not expecting these eggs to be fertile as i had two externals running flat out after doing a water change last night,

Discus Not Eating

i have a female brown discus,which has not eaten for a few days,i put her in a 2ft tank on her own as she was just staying on her own,away from the rest,i treated her with fish cure for three days,then returned her to my other tank with discus but again, she stayed on her own,i thought she looked dark, but when i put her in with my other discus,her colouring seemed ok,but to be safe i again put her on her own,she seems to just hang there vertical,any idea's as to what is wrong any advice is welcome thank you.

i keep looking at hekels and am falling big time in lover for these but id like some info .When i first steeped into the wild discus scene every book magazine article was like nooooooooooooooooooooo impossible .. 3 years on and apart from dropping me bottle ive found them easier than all the pretty coloured discus ..SORRY GUYS..AND GIRLS... and better looking ,.....Now id like a crack at what to me is the holy grail a couple of hekels ...My other wild tanks a re ph 7 .. i know this is a tad high for hekels

i can bang out ro water at 5ph neat and bolster accordingly ...What would anybodys suggestions be on proper water for these and were to obtain good qty fish i am not interested in trying to breed them ,all books and internet info range the ph from 3.2 to 7.6ph so i kinda gotta a headache ..

or shall i leave alone

Discus Tank Taking Shape

Hi Guys,
I have been setting up my 300L tank in preperation for Discus for a while now, just this week introduced my plants and few cardinals to get things up and running. I have attached a few photo's for you guys to pass opinion / advise on.

Can anyone advise if i will require specific lighting for the plants in my tank? My tank is 300L (L)1230mm x (W)500mm x (H)500mm, I am currently using the lights supplied with the tank, one normal light which i don't find very bright and one slight purple colour light which gives the water a slightly different effect, i am not sure of the wattage of either of these lights.

I am using an Eheim external canister filter in which i have placed a carbon pad, am i correct in saying this should be removed after a couple of weeks of use? and if so will i ever have to use one again?

I thought my fish were looking a bit off colour, and found a dead brislenose 2 days ago, then today another bristlenose had gone, so I did a Nitrate test and it was very high, and Ph had dropped to 4.3!!!
This evening my wife said she couldnt see the large red turq, and on closer inspection I spotted it rotting under some bog wood.The smell as I removed it from the tank is indescribable.
I have no spare RO water at the moment, so am keeping finmgers crossed the ehiem 2128 does its job over night.
Sad day, She was a beautiful fish

Well it's been a long time coming, to long really but it's time to start this journal before it's too late. As I start this the tank is well on the way to being set up, filled with substrate and sand etc waiting for the plants to be delivered. All looking good but lets start at the beginning and see how we got this far:

It was back in January we decided at we needed a bigger thank to house our rapidly growing Discus so after some measuring and thought about where and how we could actually fit one into our smallish house we came up with a place that would hold a 68" long tank. It so happens that Aquariums Ltd make a tank just that size, so with no further ado I called them up and ordered a 68 x 30 x 24 tank on a cabinet and a 48 x 18 x 18 sump.

We decided that we would keep a large area clear of plants which would be easy to clean and restrict the planting to the back of the tank. We thought also at this time that maintenance of such a deep tank would be difficult (at this point we decided this would have to be a low tech tank but more of that later)so we decided we would also try and form a barrier between the two sections which would help keep food in the clear area and help prevent plants spreading into the clear area. After searching through countless planted tank pictures for inspiration the only things suitable either looked like dry stone walling or something from a municipal garden. By chance I saw a thread on another forum where somebody had made a rockscape out of lava rock and expanding polyurethane foam, bizzare but it worked. This in mind we came up with the idea of fabricating a sand bank running the length of the tank inter spaced with stones.

This next bit looks horrendous but hang on in there the finished thing looks not that bad! So we started with a piece of MDF the size of the tank and a stack of rocks we selected from the beach. After a couple of hours mucking about we settled on a layout that we hoped would fit the bill, with this in mind we ordered some redmoor root from aqua essentials. A couple of days later it arrived and we double checked our arrangement with the wood and it confirmed our choice. I pencilled in the plan of the sandbank onto the MDF then removed the rocks. The MDF was coated in a layer of wax as a releasing agent for the polyurethane foam. A layer of the afore mentioned foam was laid down along the marked outline and allowed to harden over night. It was trimmed down in the areas where the stones would fit to a height of 1.5 inches or so, this would then be covered by sand in the front. Each stone was covered in cling film to allow removal and placed in position. Finally more foam was squirted around and left to harden overnight. The excess was trimmed away with a sharp knife to look something like what I wanted and the stones removed before a final sanding to shape. To finish this to make it actually look like sand it was coated in white tinted epoxy resin and white gravel sprinkled on carefully, actually this took a couple of coats to look right. Sadly I see to have lost the photographs of this part of the construction sorry. Anyway the finished article looked, well a monstrosity but we had to remember that only a small part of it would actually be seen.

Male Needed!

One of my Checkerboards are going out of their mind trying to breed.
She has spent the last two days flirting to every other fish, cleaned three different places, and laying eggs like crazy from 20:00 through till lights out at 22:45 She was the same for three days last week.
I just can't believe there are no suitors in my tank, three of my discus are confirmed females (watched them lay eggs in the past), the others I still don't know?
I've got nine discus, covering seven different strains, bought from three breeders.
What is the chance they are all flipping females???

I need a man in my tank!
The breeding tank is sat their waiting for a pair.

Top Tips For Begginers/newcomers To Discus

Hi All,

I thought it would be nice if everyone put there Top Tip For anyone that is thinking or has newly become addicted to discus. So that they can look through here and see loads of really helpful advice from people who have been in there shoes already and maybe answers to some of the questions they may have.

So the Rules:

1. Please Only put ONE top tip so that everyone may be able to give there experiences and ideas and not just a handfull of people. if at some point there is another top tip you may have and it has not been said then please just give it a week or so and then put it down.

2. Please be respectful of other people's top tip even if you do not agree with it, it is in there opinions So please do not start arguing with them over it.

( if it is totaly wrong and may cause distress to any fish or there owners, or there have been hurtfull or nasty comments made about yours or other peoples top tip, please advise the moderator at once and they will look at it and maybe correct or remove it.)

Hi, After much thought i have decided to sell up. I have a 5ft tank on stand and with matching lid, all equipment and 13 discus.
11 discus are around the 5 inch mark and the other 2 2 inch. They are of various strain.
Also i have an ro unit and 220 litre butt, plus 2 18 inch cubes and a 3ft metal stand.
I am looking for 50 per fish, or 450 the group, The tank and equipment �3OO although i do have interest. However, first come first served.

hi im paddyray am new to discus keeping but have kept just about everything else in the last forty years including marines and was one of the first peaple to inport tanganicans from africa these were flown into manchester airport i actualy had to go through a shop to get them inported anyway back to the matter at hand am setting up a new tank have allready got an ro unit and have just bought 56lb of silika sand but have decided i dont want to breed discus so am planning to fill p-pots with a good plant substrate [any suggestions as to whitch one to use would be welcome ]and bury in the sand the tanks 4ft6in long 18indeep and 2ft wide dunno how many galls it holds [am old scool dont work in LTRS ] have loads off pumps and stuff lying around but was concidering just using sponges as i dont think neither discus or plants want blown round the tank with a big external filter anyway whot i need to know is thair anything i can get to put under the silika sand or should i just dump the sand and go for a good planting substrate and plant directly in the tank [comments welcome] all the best paddyray gretna scotland

Lava Rock

Obviously all lava rock properties are different, there's no certainty what it'll change (if anything) as regards to water. But generally, does anyone no much about it?

I've recently acquired x6 5KG boxes of black lava rock in hopes to make a nice 3D background for the fish tank. My first instincts were, "its used in filter, its safe for tanks if its pure". Well I'm just making sure. My intentions are to break it down into small enough pieces, soak, dry, soak dry etc until I feel it is safe, maybe do some extended tests on the water before and after the rock have been put in, just to see what it effects. I have proximally 2 months before I need to use it as I'm waiting on a new tank to be made specifically for me. So theres no rush in this.

I just want peoples thought and ideas on Lava rock. Cheers

hi there all
just a quick hello, i am new to the discus world! but not new to fish keeping i have many tanks with arowanas, amazon biotope tank, oddballs (pangasuis,tinfoils,L number plecs,fire ells ect) and a zebra pleco breeding group. and one huge jap koi pond. i have started a new tank with discus as i fell in love with the colours and calm nature of them.

i am keeping the discus in a WxHxL 60"x30"x24"

with the following equipment

rena smart 300w heaters x2
4x D&D 55w T5 tubes 2xdeep antic one blue and one red tube
tetra tec 400 air pump

i have got 2 excellet discus from david lai and a few not so good from other sellers so am on the look out for some good discus so if anyone can point me in the right direction and also let me know what to look for inna good discus let me know.

Hi people,
this morning my postman delivered the Tetra Prima that I won on this forum the other week.

First thing first, Alex you're a star for providing meaningful prizes! Thank you very much!

This is the first time I have seen or used Prima in my tank, until now I have used a combination of Tony Tan Day to Day mixed with Tony Tan Vital Power and more recently Hikari Discus Bio-Gold.

What would my discus think of this new addition to their diet, they have been known to refuse new things in the past, even after fasting them for a few days.

I placed a small pinch in some tank water to pre-soak, they sank almost straight away. Thats a good sign I thought, now to see what the discus think.
Having dropped the Prima in the tank I think it took all of 3 seconds for my fish to decide they liked it, all gone in less than one minute!!!
RESULT!!!
As I sit typing this they are looking at me with greedy faces.
Think I'm on to a winner with Prima.

I recived 12 discus yesterday from malaysia ( i live in cyprus btw )
two of them died .. the first one died about 10 minits after i slowly intruduced them seapratly in to the tank 30 mins approx
and today i found the second one dead . !
the remaning discus are breathing fast , they have colour but still a bit dull
aquarium contains anumbias giagantea vassilineria giagantea ,
i have left the lights off and havent fed them yet .
im worried because of stress they might be vounrable to other disises , is there any advice you could give me to help

Hma filter is now up and running with all the right cartridges at last!!!

been about 2 months since i bought them and now the problem is solved

just waiting for my tubeing to come for me to run it straight into my tank,, which is a question im going to ask!!!!

i change 75 litres everytime i do a change will it be orite to just fill it back up with hma water as it is going to take a while as its only 50gpd unit, so will it affect the discus if it takes to long?

I has an idea tonight, it would be very useful to add another 25 litres of water to my set up.
What I was thinking to do.
Placing a 25 litre food grade container in the cupboard, plumbed into that would be the waste hose that comes straight out from under the tank.
Then plumbing a ridged pipe into the top with the pipe reaching down to the bottom of the container, connected to this would be the original waste pipe that goes to the external filter.
I think this would cost me under �20.00 to make.

What do you think?
My tank is 260 litres with a Fluval 305 external
Do you think this it a lot of work for a 10% gain in total water volume?

Hi .....I have been keeping tropical fish for over 20 years but recently returned to discus.
Besides the LFS 's I am finding it hard to get a breeding pair.
I have 7 different sizes and colours of Discus at present with none showing any signs of pairing.
I really don't fancy getting fish posted to me and was wondering if there are any other breeders in Northern Ireland?
I have 2 tanks set up at present using RO water etc.

New Member - New To Discus!

Hi Guys,
I have recently purchased a 300L tank and it is my intention to keep discus. I have listed a couple of points below about my tank which i would appreciate some reassurances / opinions / advice on before i place any fish in the tank :

- I have used 100% RO water and added Equilibrium to replace the mineral content and i am currently adding buffer to lower the ph to 7.0, can anyone advise which water tests i should be carrying out and what i should expect the results for these tests to be?

- I have added driftwood and rocks from my local beach into the tank (as advised by the tank supplier), the driftwood was steeped in the bath for a week and the rocks were boiled for ten minutes prior to them being placed into the tank, but i am now worried that these could prove to be a problem, even though they were retrieved from a blue flag beach...........has anyone else tried this?

Floating Plants

Hi all, its time for change in my main tank, just thought I'd get some help before jumping in.
I've done the high tech planted aquarium before. Don't really want to do that again.
At the moment the tank is bare bottom while I grow out my latest additions.

What I've got planned next is a cross over of the two.
Bottom will stay bare.
What I want to do at the top / waterline is to copy the flooded forest theme.
I've already got in place a great piece of wood, it looks just like a tree root reaching down into the tank ( fixed to the strut brace).
What I now want to do is add floating plants and some form of plant that would tangle around the root, hopefully getting that plant to almost fall from above.

What do you guys & girls think to these three choices?
Salvinia Natans and Pista Stratiotes as a floating carpet.
Hydrocotyle Verticillata used around the tree root.

Will they stand up to the higher temperature, on the different plant websites there is conflicting parameters.
Does anyone have first hand experience with these plants in a discus tank?

Not Eating, Swollen Belly Discus

Hi all,
I'm relatively new to the forum but really could do with some advice, so here we go, I'll try to be as breif as poss,
We have a 120 litre planted aquarium that has :3 discus (large discus is a blue turq, small female ocen green and male blue diamond)
4 rummy noses,
7 pristellas,
3 mountain minnows,
2 ansisterus
2 shrimp.
We water change 25-30% twice a week. Feed on a mixture of homemmade beefheart mix or frozen discus food.
The two 2 big discus were mating and had got to the stage of wrigglers and so we decided to get them their own tank. However after moving them into it the female went off her food and after 4 days of her not eating we moved them back into the main tank thinking she would come round. During the time she had been moved out the remaining liitle discus put eggs down. When we moved them back in again the little female started flirting with the male. Large female still would n't eat but ended up putting eggs down shortly followed by little female. None of the eggs got firtelised. I went out for a couple of hours when I came back in they all had cloudy eyes and the large female appeared to be dark and slimy with bits of white hanging off her. They were all rubbing themselves a lot too. I tested the parameters and all were normal. I water changed every day with addition of melafix for a week and a half until it appeared to to have cleared up. During the time of waterchange and melafix the large female started tentively eating. However once the cloudy eye had gone she stopped again. She faces the glass in the back corner, her belly appears swollen and often hangs near the surface of the tank. She turns pale with black stripes when the male comes near her. The rest of the time her pattern is visible but shes a dull colour. Weight wise she is thinner than the other two but I can't see her bones yet which is a bit puzzeling because she has n't fed now for a good while. The male has now started mating with the other female, they got to the egg stage and once again they have cloudy eye. I am stumped. The parameters are all still normal. Whats going on? Our local fish shop expert thought that they may have originally crashed the pH with their mucous membrane after all mating. I would n't have been able to tell with our pH test as the lowest it shows is pH6 which is what it has been at for a while. He recommended we tried increase it a little so at least we could see if it did drop which we have been doing with the addition of lime stone. The pH is now 6.4. Nitrate, nitrite and ammonia all 0 but they have cloudy eye again. We were uneasy about putting any chemicals in as it seems to upset them. Any advice please?

Far East Or European?

hi everyone, been hearing differing opinions on keeping malaysian discus with german discus and wilds with domestic. i understand that wilds and domestic can be dodgie, but does anyone do it? and why not mix german with far east fish? would like your views and reasons for and against, got my eye on some german fish. also, i'm looking at a large number of fish for my main tank,qt could be a problem! any ideas!? thanks ian.

How Often Do I Feed My Discus?

Well after months of planning, saving and getting my tank nice and stable, I finally got 6 Discus on Thursday.
I was just wondering how often and what you lot feed your Discus on a day to day basis?
I've got Bloodworm, Daphnia, white mosquito larvae and artemia, as I know they like a varied diet. Is there a good pellet food for Discus? Do I feed the pellet food once a day and then one of the other frozen foods once a day or is there a better way?
I just don't want to overfeed them or starve them.

I have not been asked to do this or paid to do this but i thought that i would do it oof my own back.

abit of why i joined:

Since i fell in love with discus i searched and searched the net until i found that the UKDC will be holding a show of discus at hayling island. me and my partner decide that we were going to go as we both love fishkeeping. And boy didnt we love it! I saw so many fantstic discus and other fish my eyes popped out!

I stated talking to people on the discus stalls and they were a great bunch of people. People like Tony, Ivan, Dougall and his wife, Mick and his wife sally, david lai, and other contestants from poland and from then on i knew i wanted to keep discus so i asked them all so many different questions and then finaly Micks wife sally asked me if i wanted to be a member. she said that i too could be a part of the group, the community of helping others like me to understand and love discus that they all so obviously did and so i did. and since then i have not looked back i have been a member for two years now and i shall be untill i am 85!!!!!

Thats why i wanted to ask you too to become a part of the communty and experence discus keeping in a whole new way!

Accidental Overdose

Ive never posted before ive just read and taken on board all the precious info you share on here and have been really successful with my three tanks
However i now need help real bad

Two nights ago i dropped a treat ment bottle in tank i retreved it as fast as i could however the fish started gasping

last night i performed a 70% percent water change as fish were gasping still after water change fish looked perfec

this morning i awoke to scene that broke my heart

so far

6 dead discus

4 remaining they look ok at mo however am at work so when i get home who knows what ill find

i have not taken the media out of filter could this still harbour the problem

water parameters are perfect just seems lack of oxygen

i dont know what to do

please can someone guide me

the bottle i dropped was interpet no 9

gutted as next week i was gonna put pics up of the three tanks and the fish as ive had them for 3 years

please anybody give some pointers

Hi all,

I was looking through a Evolution Aqua booklet the other day and came across a product called Koi Guard. It is a computer thing that moniters ph, temp, nh4, no2 and no3 and your KH i think. After asking about it i found out that it was never actualy made, which sucks.

Does any one know of any other product that does this? You could also log on via a website and control up to 5 different electrical items. would be great for automatic water changes or just to keep an eye on anything when away on holiday!

Interpet Anit-Hair Algae

Well I know for the best part that the majority of Interpet medications are rubbish and do more harm then good, but what about Interpet ani-Hair Algae? There isn't much information written about it. And before you say, "you need to find the source of the problem to cure it", don't worry, I'm well aware of that and I've done my best to sort the "source" out. Phosphates at 0, Nitrates at 10ppm, less than 6 month old bulbs/LED's, lights are on for no more than 7 hours a day and there is minimal excess nutrients in the tank. So as far as I'm concerned, I've done my best to break the cycle. Now I also know that it takes time for the Hair algae to dye off, luckily for me it's been growing slowly, but growing none the less. The one, and only question I want to know is, Is Interpet Anti Hair Algae actually safe for Discus and similar? I can imagine this "treatment" takes time to work, and doesn't work much faster then to just leaving it be and let it die naturally. Obviously putting chemicals into the tank for what ever reason is a possible risk, if not a definite one. But, is it safe?

For those who are concerned about the reason behind this sale is because I keep a bare bottomed tank for my Discus fishes, hence the gravel is useless as I do not intend to make a show tank with gravel.

Why did you buy the gravel in the first place then?

Spent about �45 on these gravel from my LFS when I upgraded my tank, but after the cycling stage I removed the gravel as I did not like the look of the gravel (You'll know what I mean when you've been keeping fishes in a BB tank for a pro-long amount of period)...

I have just bought 3 Discus from someone who was shutting his tank down. A Snakeskin, Red melon and a red turk. They are all a good size and seem healthy apart from the turk. Its eyes are dark, I know this means something but Im not sure what. Also, The snake skin is always attacking the turk, They were fine in the original tank, It just since I got them home

Hi All I got some new fish the other day....... Susan Wanted me to get some more Spider face rubies as she loves them but i thought i would wait and pick some up from the show!

And they are gorgeous! Perfectly Round And fat and now just showing signs of colouring up! into the nice and blue fish that they are going to be..... here are some quick ( and probably horrible) photos that i took.......... and you know me there maybe a video!

well here they are arrived Nice and safe on thursday at around 11.30 ish and i could not wait to see what they looked like!

so this is the first one i pull out of the expertly and safely packed bag.... What a beauty! i could not belive my luck, it was a stonker!

And here it is floating in the tank getting adjusted to the temperature. i must say seeing as the weather is nice and warm in the day and coldish at might they wernt as cold as people think they could be... but that was probably due to David Adding a heat pack just to be sure!

and this little beauty is the second one i pulled out! and again i could not belive how lucky i was witht he quality of them!

Here is a pic of them both in there new Quarentine tank with the filter booster powder settleing at the bottom

and then heres a pic of the third and the fist floating in there new home together!

but then the forth Gave me a bloody Scare was lying on the bottom of the bag on its side!!!! i thought it was all too good to be true!!!! ..................but then he soon picked up when he was floating in the tank and got warm again!

And heres a few pics of them swiming around after release......... to release them what i did was upturned the bag drained all the water out of the bag into a bucket and slide them into there new tank..... ( only do this if you know how....... and how to react if it goes wrong lol)

i have seperated my P B and white diamond into an iso tank as they were showin positive signs of pairin off i have noticed her apetite is gettin less & less and when i fed them some blood worms today she just seemed to ignore the food she is still showin positive signs of breedin and noreal signs of malnurishmentyet but i am concerned do i put her back in the main tank or not or what do i do

Yellow Crystal Progress

This little discus found a new home in my tank in January of this year, 3.5" including tail in size.

After QT it was added to the main tank where it has thumped on the weight and size, it is already at the 5" this time not including the tail.

As you can see it is growing great and now the adult colours and patterning are showing through.

To say I'm well chuffed is an understatement. This is only 3 months on so I'm really looking forward to see what the next few months produce.

hello guys i bought 10 2 1/2" discus fish about 3 weeks ago,they were all out of the same tank,so which this person said had been quarentined.
once in my tank they all huddled in the corner,so i kept light off till following day
,but they stayed in corner and did not feed.after about 2 days they finaly started to eat frozen blood worm,tropical flake and tetra prima.
then a few days later a few of them stoped eating and went dark and had white stringy poo then a day later they died (gutted) then a few days
later the same thing happend again and guess what they also died.
now i have 3 left out of ten.the ones that are left have gone dark,slightly cloudy eyes,trying to rub them selves on bog wood.plants etc,
white like slime on body but not alot of it,tiny like hairs out of anus and they are still in corner of tank .but when i feed them they do eat and
they do look a bit brighter when feeding and doing a water change, but after a while go back dark any help would be great

not got kit for kh gh ,i do at least 25% water change every 2 days with tap water .
