I have 3 newly aquired discus the trouble is one of them is really aggresive to the other fish, to one in paticular. He seems to think that all of the tank is his teratory and all the food is his also. Its a shame really cos the other fish the one he picks on the most is showing stress bars and the other one hides in a plant all the time. I was thinking of adding another discus to complete my set up but having second thoughts now because of this bugger. Any suggestions welcome.

? Spawning Pair

My partner has got a pair of what we were told are moonstone marlboros and were bought as a spawning pair. He got them about 2 months ago and although I thought I'd seen them having a flirt - quivering - when we went to pick them up there has been absolutely no sign of them doing anything since they arrived in their new 'home'.

Home is a 39x20x16 tank, with a Fluval 105 filter, airstone, breeding cone, bogwood and just a few pebbles to anchor the pipe for the airstone. They have a varied diet - eat better than we do in fact!! Parameters are nitrite 0 nitrate 0 ammonia 0 pH 7 but live in a very hard water area. He's been using filtered rain water to lower the GH/KH and it is working but slowly. THe fish look fit & healthy, in fact better than they did when we first got them home. He is a lovely 6" beast she's a 5" beauty. and so far all they've done is look at the thing, they pay more attention to the pipe for the stone and he's a sod for swimming at the thermometer to get our attention. Is this normal that they may take a long time to 'have a go'?

Sick B/ds

I'm very new to this whole forum thing and quite new to discus too so please forgive me before I start. I as given a breeding pair of blue diamonds about 4 months ago who have regularly spawned on their cone very 7-9 days like clockwork. They are in a tank on their own that has just a scattering of gavel, an airstone, minimal decs ( in the front room so didn't want it too bare). The tank is 36x15x19, has an eheim 2300(might be wrong but am at work on nites!) filter and the water parameters are nitrite 0 nitrate 20 ammonia 0 pH is around 6.5 (have used a buffer with no probs for 2 months) but the GH & KH are high, as I live ina hard water areaand the temp is 30 degrees.

I wanted a safe and simple solution to my hard water 'problem' ( & if I'm truthful fairly cheap) as although I had the fish because I'm mesmerised by them, I thought it was a pity that their eggs never came to anything, quite probably due to the GH/KH. I can't afford the cash or space for an RO gizmo and don't drive so transporting RO water as regularly as I'd need it to maintain levels isn't viable at the mo. I was discussing this with a fellow discus enthusiast who said to try using a water softener pillow - taking half the gubbins out and rolling it up to prevent any escaping and leave it under the intake pipe of the filter overnight. This I did and didn't see much of a colour change in the tank, went to work and cvame home to do a regular 20% change that eve and test the parameters. All were exactly the same but the fish looked awful.

Everything bout them looked like what I think sounds like HITH, they were dark -the female almost black - whiteish jelly poo holed up in a corner of the tank by the heater - within a couple of hours she looked like she'd been too close to the heater with what I thought ws a burn right by her top fins. As you can imagine I was terrified for them and gutted, although proven breeders I loved the for themselves and honestly thought I was about to lose them.

The only thing I could put it down to was the softener pillow despite the parameters being no different. Anyway, I tried some discus diease treatment, (Hexamita??) thinking it couldn't hurt but didn't hold out much hope to be honest. 4 days later, George is back to his old self and Mildred's colour is definitely lightening, she's much more friendly, to the point of eating from my hand and the 'scarring' is noticeably lessened. I've kept the water changes the same, every other day and adjusted the dosage slightly as recommended with very tightly crossed fingers, especially as my ward sister doesn't appreciate my being "preoccupied just because of a couple of fish" - How dare she!! Touch wood so far I seem to be doing the right thing but would appreciate any input and advice from you geniuses and apologise profusely for how long this is!!

love
Calli (robynemma)

Help!

Hi there,

Hope you all don't mind, but I have a few questions that I would like to ask as I am new to discus (as is a Portuguese friend of mine who doesn't read English and he also would like help)

My friend has just been given a tank which with gravel in takes between 150 and 200Lt of water. We have been around to all the local tropical fish stores in our area to source and price out items which are needed (what we've been told we'll need that is) but we have been getting conflicting answers to nearly all our questions. With that in mind here are just a few things I (we) would like answering if possible:

Does anyone know the filters made by Sunsun?

Do we need a UV light? (If so, one that comes inside a filter or an other sort)

For this size tank what would be the best size filter?

Are Ehiem filters any good and if so which model would you sugest?

Are there other forms of filters which can be used?

Do we need one of those R/O thingies?

My friend has got one of those slatted filters under the gravel with 2 tubes coming up at 2 of the corners for filtration. Can he keep this in along with the (to be aded) filter or should he remove it?

All this "changing X%" of the tank's water per day: What happens to the water which is removed? Does it simply go down the drain or is it re-filtered back into the tank?

In addition to the prior question, is there an automated method for this "water changing"?

There is one thing that we have really had trouble in finding out the right answer and that is the correct water temp for discus. 50% say 28º to 29ºC and the other 50% say around the 26ºC. The ones that are saying around the 26ºC seem to make a bit of sense with the reason they give. Their reason is that with this temp if the fish get ill with something and we need to ad some sort of medication we would usually need to up the temp by 2 to 3ºC for the medication to react properly and if the temp was 29ºC then we could not do this as then the water would be too warm for the discus. Having had aquariums for some years this did strike me making some sense, but as I know zilch about discus I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Phil

Juwel Vision 180 Bowfront In Beech

Evening All,

I am trying to shift my spare tank. I really need to room and I am getting married next year and the tank is just sitting in the dining room gathering dust, savings need to be made.

As you will have gathered from the title, it is a Juwel Vision 180 Litre Bowfront tank, the internal filter has been removed, but I have installed rubber suckers on it, so I was able to remove it completely if needed.
- The heater is included.
- The pump seems a bit temperamental. I used two externals and a sponge in the tank so I cant comment on its reliability.
- The light unit was replaced in July and has two spare tubes.
- Includes beech stand, unfortunately has a small knock on the right hand door.

I will post some pictures later. If anyone is interested please PM me.

I live in Sevenoaks, Kent, I would deliver but I cant fit it in the car.

Thanks
Chris

Coral Buffering

hi
just need a little advice re my setup. I have a 60 gallon setup containing 5 discus (4medium size, 1 small), 25 cardinals, 9 corys and 2 small plecs (L150... or so i'm told) Everything has matured well, fish appear happy, plants growing well, no excess algea etc.
My main concern is that my pH drops very easily to pH<6 (my test kit only goes as low as this) , i understand this is due to my soft tap water (kH <3) meaning it has a very low buffering capacity for the hydrogen ions from the nitrogen cycle.
Other water stats ammonia and nitrite are 0ppm and nitrates <15ppm.
The pH of the HMA filtered water goes in at pH 7.5ish. (i don't use RO)
The tank pH remains low, despite regular water changes of 33% everyother day. Is it worth adding some coral gravel/sand to the setup to increase the buffering capacity of the tank, and if so how much and how do I add it? or is there another solution?

cheers
bob

Hight Tds Issue

Hi all.

I am new to the form and new to Discus keeping. I have had Malawi Chiclids for over 10 years and thought it is time for a change and moved to Discus. I got rid of all my fish cleaned the tank and gravel out to prepare the tank for my discus. I installed a 3 stage RO system. I filled my 300 litre tank with 75% ro water and 25 % treated tap water and ran it for 8 weeks. I have an external Fluval 405 filetr and to promote bacteria I was adding a littel food on a daily basis.
I populated my tank after 8 weeks with 20. Neon Tetras, 15 Black Tetra 5 ruby nose tetras, 2 rainbow gramis and 4 Rams. After week 12 Introduces my discus and my water parameters were:
Ph7.5
Amonia 0
Nitrate- 5 mg/L
Nitrite 0
KH 70
GH 100
TDS 85
Temp 29-31c
Now the problem strated when Ick hit my Rams and started spreeading. I removed the carbon from my filters and treated my tank with ick medicine. After a week I added core salt and increased the temprature to 31 degrees celicius. It has been two weeks adn the ick has gone but my TDS is stll at 580 even afetr daily water changes at 60 litres a day(85% RO ansd 15% tap). My parameters now are
Ph7.5
Amonia 0
Nitrate- 20 mg/L
Nitrite 0
KH 70
GH 100
TDS 580
Temp 29-31c
Waht can I do to bring down my TDS? Are all other parameters OK?

Hi

I am planning to install a salt-based domestic water softener for the general household. This would, however, mean that the input water to my RO and HMA filtration unit would have been pre-processed by the water softener.

Is this likely to have any detrimental effects on my RO membrane - the output, I imagine will still be H2O with <25ppm...

Perhaps the problem will be with the output from the HMA unit?
Darting Around And Dead In 12 Hrs

ok, this blue snakeskin at 3.5 inches was fine one minute and then started darting around the tank bashing into everything in sight, i netted him in a big net and left him in it suspended in the tank so it wouldnt harm itself as this was 10.30 last night and too late to do anything about it . this morning it was dead. it was in a 70 gal tank with 7 other similar sized stendker bred fish, hma water, 40% wc every day, fish was feeding well on beefheart and granules along with the others, no darkness or flicking, no funny poos, i had had it a couple of months and it had grown well along with the others. there were absolutely no signs that it was ill untill this darting about started last night. all the remaining fish in the tank are fine. i think i have had this some time ago with another fish, anybody any ideas as to what causes this ? if i was using treated tapwater i would of sworn that was the cause (heavy metals), but it has always been in hma water. ph 7.2 gh 3 kh 1 mature filters, ammonia etc all good.

One of my eight Chen discus is just not quite right. For the first few days after getting them it was one of the most confident and fed well. Since then it has withdrawn to the back of the tank and rarely comes out. It does pick and eat beefheart & brineshrimp and its faeces are dark and evident most days but something is just not quite right with it. It holds it colour like all the others and is for all intense and purposes a very healthy looking fish, but compared to the others its just not right. Is there anything I can do? I'm beginning to think it my have a digestion issue?

I change 40% of the water each week using RO water and the parameters are Temp 29C, zero Ammonia and nitrite and 20 nitrate. Gh is 8-10, kH 4-5 and pH 6.5.

Anything I can do to get the fish on track?

I've had them all for two weeks now.

Hope its okay to post this, if not i am sure someone will remove. I purchased a ro unit back in Feb from RO MAN. Over the last couple of days i found that my TDS had risen to 30 despite flushing the membrane weekly, and recently changing the pre filters.. I contacted ro man by e mail and received a reply within 15mins, which explained what may have caused the problem, it went on to offer me a new membrane free of charge as a good will gesture. Cant beat that for service!!!
Hi

I bought two new Discus last week. They are both Stendker Marlboro Reds, one is 4.5" and the other is 4".

I bought them from a Discus breeder near Manchester, tho he didn't breed these, they are from Mad4Discus who got them straight from Stendker.

They are lovely fish and have settled in really quickly, they were eating the morning after I collected them.

The smaller Discus does have a slight fault, its nose area bends to one side slightly, it doesn't stop it from eating at all tho. I got it to keep the other one company plus I have no plans on breeding.

Here are some pictures of them.

The larger one.

The smaller one.

I hope you like them.

I was wondering in my size tank ( 6 x 2 x 3 ) could i get away with having just one angel with 15 discus? or would the angel because it has been in there for the last 2 years bully the new discus that i shall be adding too much?

i have also read that there is some kind of disease that the angel fish carry to give to the discus. But then i have also read that you can mix them so it is some what of a confusing subject.

I will have to part with her if it comes to being safe.... my dad said she will have the majority of my angels.

So Whats your views on this?

Alex

Problem Ph / Substrate?

Hi everyone,

Unfortunatley I keep getting PH spikes, nothing amazingly high but I just cant manage to keep my PH down. I'm aiming to run the tank at about 6.5Ph and have been getting there, but then suddenly it will go back to being 7 or 7.5 and now even 8!

I have removed all the rocks from my tank apart from a small bit of slate and the tank is fairly heavily planted.
Since the problem started I have been using less and less buffers in my RO water until now I am doing small amounts, say 10%? of raw RO daily to try to lower it but am still having no luck.

My KH had been slowly going lower over the past month from 10 - 6 so I thought the PH would gradually drop but it has now risen again.

The conclusion I have come to is that the substrate I have in the tank is causing the problem (dorset gravel i think). I'm a little stuck for ideas on how to change this for something else, I would have to empty the tank and put the fish in a temporary home. All I have is a 20L quarntine spare tho.

Currently in the tank is:

3 medium sized blue turqs
8 neon tetras
6 Harlequins
6 panda corys
2 dwarf cichlids
and 2 small royal plecs

I'm guessing this would be way to much to leave in a 20L tank while I changed the main tank and left it a day or two to settle?

So, any ideas as I feel im in abit of a pickle

Thanks, FF

Strange Behavior!

I just put 2 discus (1 cobalt, 1 turquoise) into a community tank of 1 dwarf gourami, 6 harlequin rasboras, 2 raphael catfish, and 1 green cory. It's a 30-gal upright tank. I keep it at 84 degrees. The introduction of the discus has not gone completely smoothly so I've got a few questions:

1. One discus is constantly chasing and nipping the other. Is this normal?

2. Both discus hide behind the filter, the heater, or in the sword plant as soon as I walk in the room. Is this normal?

3. The dwarf gourami is much much smaller than the discus but is nipping both of them. I knew DG were territorial but I didn't know they were THAT ballsy.

These behaviors have me wondering if the tank is overstocked or if the fluorescent lighting is too strong for the discus. Any ideas?

Here's a few pics of the setup:

Thanks for the help!
Luke

How To Feed Frozen Food On The Bare Area Of Substrate (and Not In All

Well my 250l discus tank is planted up now, and the CO2 system is installed and working at a very low level just to get the fish used to the idea!

However, I'd been thinking about the issue of avoiding food ending up in the ground cover planted area, and I've had a bit of a brainwave.

I've left an area of unplanted substrate with the aim of always feeding the fish at that end of the tank, but the problem of course is that froxen food floats around the tank in the current until it decides to drop... all over the palce of course, so I've solved it with my new invention!

Used a Tropica pot from the plants, wired it with a long handle, and problem solved. Now I just place the block of food in the water, plunge the pot over the top and down to the area of substrate I want it to be in, leave the handle hooked over the side for a couple of minutes until the food drops and then remove the pot, leaving the food exactly where I want it!

Now I just have to get the discus used to knowing where their food will appear.

Unidentified Creatures In Tank

I think there are some kind of tiny creatures in my water conatiners that I then transfer to my tank when doing water changes. I have noticed the last 3 times I have done water changes that straight after I have noticed 5 or so tiny (5m long) whitish creatures sliding around on the inside of the glass. I have added wormer lately so they disapear rapidly but they are always there right after a water change. I set up my RO filter outside so I guess they have got in at some point when running the RO filter into the containers. What can I use to sterilise and clean the containers?

Help, Sick Discus?

Hi everyone,

Firstly, sorry for having to make my first post a negative one. I'm fairly new to discus (about 2 weeks now) but have been keeping tropical fish for about 8 months now.

Basically, one of my new turquoise discus seems to be in a spot of bother. I woke up this morning to find him floating at the top of my tank and thought ohh know whats happened expecting him to be a gonner. As i opened the tank he suddenly swam back down?! It appears that he may be having some problems with his swim bladder as he cant stay down and is constantly floating to the top?

On closer inspection it looks like his sides just below and behind his fins are swollen but colour and everything else looks fine.

There last meal was some live bloodworm and water fleas later yesterday afternoon and where all fine before that.

Tank maters are 8 neon tetras, 8 harlequins, 6 panda corys and 2 dwarf cockatoos

I had my water tested yesterday and the parameters are:

Temp: 27.5 C

PH 7
GH 11
KH 7
Nh3 / NH4 0
NO2 0
NO3 0
PO4 0.1

If theres any other info I have left out that would be helpful please let me know.

Thanks, FF

Decent Batch Of Eggs On Internal Filter

I'm very pleased to announce that my new pair have laid their first proper batch of eggs. Does anyone have any words of wisdom as this is my first breeding pair?? Some of you may know my tank stats from previous posts but just in case:
I have 2 new discus in a 220L tank on their own. They are 4 - 4.5 inches in size.
Water parameters are:
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0 - 5
PH 6.5
KH 10
GH 15
Tank has Fluval 305 external canister filter with ceramic tubes in the media baskets and the 4 large foam pads. An internal fluval filter (as backup), I think it's the 4Plus with just the 2 large foam pads in it. Both filters matured for a few months before being used in this tank, I don't use carbon in either of the filters. I have an additional 18w UV steriliser filter. In the tank are 2 medium sized bits of planted bogwood and a very thin layer of white sand. I'm using RO water with Pro Marine Discus minerals for water changes, I use just half the stated dose of the minerals as the full dose seems too much. I also add 1 litre of treated tap water for every 60 litres of RO to add some additional buffer and minerals to the RO water, I dare not add much more than that as we do literally have liquid rock in the taps rounds here. I change about 80 - 100 litres a week usually in 2 lots, it depends how much spare time I have.

I have the internal filter turned to half flow and direct the outlet at the side of the tank to reduce the effect of the flow in the water. The water from the external canister filter and UV filter enters back in to the tank via a spray bar which i have right at the top of the water line so it causes a few ripples on the surface. I also have an air pump and stone on low as a temporary measure because I was initially concerned about the amount of oxygen in the water, I'm not sure how long I'll leave that on.

Im going to get some dither fish this week in the hope they will draw them out. Cardinals and rummynose etc. I don't fancy congos, too active and large, any other dither fish? Someone recommended serpae tetras but I thought these nipped?

White Spots

I discovered two white spots on the fins of one of my Discus. The reason was low water quality as I was abroad for 15 days and I had no one to take of water changes. I did a 50% water change when I arrived but discovered that one had spots. I raised the temperature to 30 - 31 degrees (was 29 degrees) hoping that by heat alone would not spread to the rest. I cannot afford to remove one as I have no other tanks to spare and last time I removed four of the smaller one, I ended up with all dead fish as the stress was too much for them. Do you think that by heat alone would cure it? should I use medications, maybe with a half dose? Frequent water changes will eventually be made to reduce the risk...I am planning to change water every fourth day.
